Overshadowed By Needless Political Commentary
March 15, 2019
I thought the first three seasons of this show were brilliant, for all its neurotic, hilarious, and biting commentary on universal themes about romance, friendship, and family, but this latest season is hampered by gratuitous and deeply unfair attacks on basically anyone who is sympathetic towards Brexit or Trump. For example, Rob, on hearing someone mention Brexit positively, responds by saying, "Oh, I forgot, you're a bigot." Or when Sharon characterizes the entire USA as a "white nationalist ethno-state" in reference to the Trump presidency. Not only are these statements gross oversimplifications, but they fall totally outside the show's core themes and strengths. If you're a fan of the show, like I am, then I would still recommend watching this season, but be prepared for the main characters to occasionally veer off into needless, hyper-partisan political jabs which detract from the show's endearing and hilarious depictions of a loving but dysfunctional family unit. Hopefully next season they will return to form and leave the political commentary where it belongs.
