All of the reviews for this song right now are either five stars or one stars. Having gone back and listened to some of Billie's older music, I can say that this one is different than her 'usual' sound. I really enjoyed the song; I loved the lyrics, Billie's singing, and the music. Yes, there is very obvious auto-tuning of Billie's voice for parts of the song - it's so obvious that I'm certain she did it on purpose. Auto-tune used to be reserved for making artists' singing voices sound better, but these days it's also an instrument.
There are music experts and voice coaches and other people who know more than the average layperson about what makes a good song. But at the end of the day, liking any given song is subjective. 'Bury a friend' appeals to my taste, but obviously grates on others' nerves. Look it up on YouTube and listen to the whole song before you decide to buy it.
Mix it with The Doors: "People Are Strange" and I would play it everyday! Like Fiona Apple, Lorde and Imogen Heap, clearly she has her own style of vocal tones, moods and deeper lyrics that take you into the world she is speaking and this may not be for everyone, but as for me, I am enjoying where she ges and I'm following along. I wish that more musicians expressed their art with more talents as this shows. I can tell that she has actual physical talent that isn't relying so much on 'machines" to bring it forward
