I have the SEL premium version of this. The good: 1- For the toys you're getting the price is unbeatable. 2- Adaptive cruise control with stop and go has proven itself to be very useful in NYC. 3- The LED headlights are amazing. 4- The interior quality feel of the car is very good, feels premium when it's actually not. 5- Uses regular gas. 6- The third row. Perfect size for kids.
Now on to the bad things: 1- Driver's side B pillar rattles a little. It's annoying, and no dealer at no time can replicate the issue, that's what they always say about rattles anyway. 2- Front shocks are way too tight. If you have driven a first generation BMW X5, you would know how bumpy the ride is, It's like that. 3- Although the bumpiness is BMW like, the engine is not. Man this thing is slow. 4- The center armrest, unlike my previous Volkswagens, is not height adjustable. It's too low for me. 5- Fender audio system is "meh". I owned an EOS with standard radio and the sound clarity was better.
The ugly: 1- My headlights showed some condensation the very first day. Dealer says this is normal and will go away, I say B*. This is a brand new car. I have contacted VW Corporate regarding this issue, I'll update my review when I have a solution from them.
I have the SE with 4 motion and optional third row.
Love this car, anyone claiming it is slow are not driving it right. Sport mode is very useful for passing, and the throttle gets hungry, I've gotten to 85mph a few times on accident. The torque is real, hills feel just easy, and the 7 drive modes including snow/ice and custom on-road, custom off-road modes really let you drive the way you want for whatever situation. The backup cam clears with the rear wiper spray which is handy in Seattle, I've driven it safely in over a foot of snow and up icy hills already, and the entertainment system is way juicy, and I dont even have the upgraded Fender system. Panoramic sunroof/moonroof feels so nice when driving through the country, and has a wind guard when it opens which is a nice touch.
Every design aspect ive encountered so far has been very thoughtful, the features and experience for the price can't be beat. Also its quicker than the Mazda CX-5 Touring.
The only annoying thing I have found is that when I leave it in my custom drive mode, the next time I start the car it says it is in my custom mode still, but the dash tells me it is in normal D drive mode and not the drive mode I set up in custom, so I have to cycle through the drive modes back to custom for it to adopt my settings again. Probably an easy bug they can fix.
I showed my sister this car and everything it can do and she went and bought one within the week.
6 year 72k mile bumper to bumper warranty is pretty incredible also.
I purchased a 2019 SE and couldn’t be happier. All the features I wanted at a price point I could stomach. Is it going to compete with a Corvette or Porsche 911... no, but do you buy a smaller SUV to do that? It’s more than capable. I test drove all the realistic competition and for me this came out on top. Very similar to the Audi Q5, just not quite as pricey.
