Clearly made for the Chinese audience
November 23, 2018
The movie was everything I expected it to be, a giant shark movie with some scary parts. What I haven't quite learned to expect is that movies are frequently being made for the Chinese audience. What this means is that Chinese characters are protected. They are self-sacrificial, heroic, and noble. Although some American characters are given the same qualities, when a foil or villain is needed, that character will certainly be American. I despise identity politics but it is so blatantly obvious in modern film, and very off-putting. Not too long ago my people came to America for a better life and I am very proud of what western culture and America in particular has given the world. In contrast to modern film, I re-watched the Lost Boys last night, which I hadn't seen since high school. At one point one of the characters quotes the Superman motto, "truth justice and the American way." That line really stood out because a modern film would never include it, as it might offend the Chinese consumer. I guess offending the American consumer is a non-issue.
