I can understand the confusion, but this version of Deluxe is intended for customers who are not required to file a state return. As a result, it is offered at a lower price point because it does not include a free state preparation. It does state in both product descriptions that this product does not come with free state preparation. I wish you the best of luck and happy filing.
I can't believe I bought the wrong version and it is not returnable. The one with state taxes is only 10 dollars more, but when you buy this version they want 39$ more. I don't know how that is even legal. That is a total rip off.
UPDATE: I was able to get a refund from Turbotax and order the right version.. but save that hassel and make sure you get the right version.
I have used TT for years to do my tax filing preparation. This year I ordered from Amazon rather than used the online version direct from Intuit. Mistake! This download version seems to be incapable of finding my previous years' returns and prepopulating the forms with my personal information, using last year's input to query me for current year's income and deducTions etc. Huge waste of time. If I could return it I would!
This sounds quite frustrating! I would suggest contacting our TurboTax Support team on Facebook or Twitter, as they will help you locate your previous tax returns and they can assist you with your next steps.
I have used Turbo Tax (various editions in the past) and have found it a very useful and fairly easy tool to use. This was the first time I used a downloaded version. I wanted to use it to estimate my taxes early because all the new tax laws made it harder to estimate the impact of changes on my tax bill. For a number of weeks it was not available. When it finally became available I downloaded it, only to discover there are significant parts that aren't ready. The result is that the program is essentially worthless (if you are doing anything but the most simple taxes such as no deductions.) There was no disclaimer or any information telling me the version I was getting was not ready and wouldn't be ready until some unknown time in the future.
I expect the final version will be useful as the prior versions I have used. But this go around it was very disappointing that I didn't get what I expected. As of this writing the program has not been updated so I cannot use it.
Every year I use the online program, I never buy it and download it. This year I did, like an idiot, buy the downloadable program. I have had to start over so many times that I am ready to pull my hair out. The only time it saved was the very first time I used the program. I wasn’t able to finish it all at one time. Every time after that I got an error message saying it couldn’t save. Then the blasted program closed itself out!!!! Every single time!!!!! I wish I never bought this program and just used the online one instead.
We hate to hear our customers not having a positive experience with our software. We are here to help. Please reach out to the TurboTax Support Team on our website or send us a message on Facebook or Twitter for assistance. We hope to hear from you soon.
I am a retired industry CPA. Because my area of expertise is cost accounting, not tax, I have used Turbo Tax Deluxe to prepare my personal returns for 25 years. The guidance in the 2018 version is poor compared to prior years. I have had to dig through the IRS website much more than in the past. This is really aggravating because my return is relatively simple. In the past it has normally only taken an hour or so to prepare and file the return... I have spent several hours this year and I am still working on it.... A pencil, paper and calculator would have worked almost as well.
I understand that this year's experience is not stacking up to the past. I kindly ask that you reach out to our support team if you feel there is anything we can do to improve this experience. You can reach them through our website or by messaging us on Facebook or Twitter. We would be happy for an opportunity to get you back on track. I hope this helps and thank you for being a loyal TurboTax customer!
We bought TB early to confirm questions on the new tax plan, and to do test runs on different assumptions, so we could do late December moves to reduce the tax load. Many of the needed forms are NOT ready yet, including Schedule A. Schedule A may not be ready until mid-January! In TB defense, very little 2018 info is available on IRS web-site. We have used TB for years. It is a generally accurate, usually fairly easy to use, somewhat cranky if you don't fit into their typical mold, serves as a relatively "safe" way to download to IRS web-site, and finally is an expensive way to easily complete your taxes. I'd suggest to buy if you want to check on "what ifs", but with the new tax laws most people should be able to fill out the basic forms (standard deductions) without any help. TB is great at about a $9.99 pricepoint.
Thanks for your feedback. You're right, the IRS has not finalized or released forms for 2018. We do offer another tool online through our website called TaxCastor Calculator, to estimate your tax refund in the meantime.
I purchased it on digital date and decided to buy the basic one based on the description. The state preparation is not included. You will end up purchase the state in the software and cost more than you purchase the deluxe version directly. If you need state preparation, I suggest you to ask for refund before downloading it.
We never want to make finding the right product confusing. There are TurboTax products for many different tax situations. We want to provide you with as much support as you need and make sure you feel you're getting the most value for your investment. If you need any help, feel free to reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter or on the TurboTax website.
The fees kept piling on. Beware buying this, read to see if it fits your needs. It cost me $40 more to download my state tax forms, and another $20 to have them direct deposit my refund. I have always just used turbo tax, but will look elsewhere next year.
I can understand the confusion. We typically package TurboTax Deluxe 2018 with a free state preparation. However, this version is intended for our customers who are not required to file a state return. As a result, we offer it at a discounted rate without a free state preparation. The state e-filing fee is required for state e-filing across all versions of TurboTax Desktop 2018, but you can avoid it by printing and mailing your state return. I hope this helps!
They claim to guarantee accuracy yet there are known problems of inaccuracy which have been ongoing for several years without being fixed. Here's an example of a well-known accuracy failure which has caused numerous users to be audited, required to re-file, have refunds delayed, etc. If you receive a 1095-A and enter the monthly values from it into TurboTax, you will discover the TurboTax computed total does NOT match the total on the form. That's because TurboTax chooses to round off the monthly totals. Therefore, by the time you round off 12 months worth of individual amounts, it obviously results in the total for the year being significantly different enough from the actual total on the form to trigger a discrepancy with the IRS. For those of you thinking to yourself, but doesn't the IRS allow rounding? Yes, it does but only for the total amount which is actually entered into your tax return and thereby used to calculate what you owe. In other words, it would be OK for for TurboTax to round of the total for the year BUT not for each individual monthly amount since that causes the annual total (which the IRS compares against and what gets used in your tax return) to be inaccurate. If you do some internet research, you can find numerous discussions/posts/etc going back several years about this ongoing problem. And to quote TaxGuyBill (a SuperUser on the Intuit Support Community) "...it is a mistake by TurboTax, and they have said they are not going to fix it." I don't know about you, but in my opinion, that is completely unacceptable and certainly does NOT align with their guarantee of accuracy.
Another guarantee which appears to be meaningless is their satisfaction guarantee. I have properly submitted a request according to their instructions for receiving a refund in accordance with the TurboTax satisfaction guarantee. When over a month had elapsed with receiving nothing, not even an acknowledgement, I contacted them again, bringing the original submission to their attention. Weeks more and still nothing, not a refund check, not an acknowledgement, not a reply to my follow-up attempt, nothing!
Ask yourself if everything you have read above indicates the sort of company you want to support with your money the next time you go to purchase tax software?
