I’m pleased with this thermometer. I actually bought it as a gift for my brother. He loves to grill but doesn’t always get the greatest results. I figured this thermometer, with the bottle opener and the temperature guide right on it, would be good for him and I was right! First time he grilled a steak for us and it wasn’t totally over cooked. He even nailed a variety of temperatures using this from rare to medium well. He was kind of amazed that was possible. I’m considering getting another one for my brother in law- great stocking stuffer or Christmas gift.
I'm not sure what I expected, but I was surprised when I opened up the thermometer, it turned on and immediately started adjusting the temperature reading. It sure wasn't that it was going to be that fast. However, it was. We tested it with some food we were cooking and it was just as quick with the food. It was faster than our old thermometer and easier to read with a nice big readout. Best of all, you didn't have to shove your face up into the cooking food to readout the temperature. There's a button you press that captures the current reading so you can pull out the probe and read it easily. Excellent stuff. Funny enough, all that was great and my wife loved it, but when I showed her there was a magnet on the back and she could attach it to the fridge (or range or microwave) she was thrilled (yeah, I don't get it either). This thing just worked and worked well. The backlight is good. You can read in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. It gets the job done.
Up until now, I have used the traditional analog thermometer to determine if food was cooked to the right temperature. Of course I could never be confident the reading on the thermometer was correct - especially over time as the device was continually used and went through numerous washings. But I no longer have that problem. Out of the box, this thermometer turned right on. Batteries are included and already installed. You can see from the picture, the prong is long enough to keep your hands away from the heat of whatever you are cooking. Additionally, unlike traditional thermometers which are basically metal all the way up to the casing around the gauge, the gauge here is encased in plastic. This means you don't have to worry about burning your fingers when determining the temperature. The reading is almost immediate; and the display shows large numbers for those who may be visually challenged. Even if you can't read the temperature while the prong is inserted in the food, there is a way to lock-in the reading so you can pull the thermometer out and bring the gauge closer to your eyes. For those that may be cooking in dimmer light, the background of the display does illuminate for easy reading. Other great features include a magnet for attaching the device to your refrigerator or stove, and the ability to fold it up for easier storage in a kitchen drawer. I have run the product through the dishwasher, with no issues, but I assume it is better to just clean it with some hot water from the faucet. Additionally, I have dropped it a few times from counter level without a scratch. Needless to say, I have thrown my other thermometer out. No matter if you are the home cook or a professional chef, I don't think you can go wrong with getting this product. I highly recommend it.
