Great for indoor exercise tracking and calorie counting
July 21, 2018
I’ve been using the MiFit2 fitness tracker (which I really really like) for awhile now to help keep me on pace with daily exercise. The YAMAY one compared very favorably in most aspects and is much better in a couple ways.
I mostly use a tracker for tracking my sleep and recording my heart rate to figure out calories burned. The MiFit2 is great for sleep tracking but makes me jump through some hoops to get calories burned - it doesn’t automatically calculate and requires a third party app to do continuous heart rate.
The YAMAY is far superior in heart rate tracking and calorie counting. If you hold the touch button for 2 seconds while it is on an activity screen, it will automatically do continuous heart rate tracking until you hold down the button again, it will then display a summary of your workout including calories burned and heart rate average. This is exactly what I want in a fitness tracker, besides step counting and sleep tracking.
The YAMAY app is only mediocre but the watch itself has a lot of functionality without the app. It integrates with the iOS Heart app, which is how I usually track long term data. I’m not sure what else it integrates with.
The heart rate monitoring is about on par with the MiFit2 (picture above). It isn’t perfect but pretty close to what I got from checking my pulse. The pedometer is also pretty similar - not perfect but pretty close to an accurate count. One feature I’m excited to try out is stride length - this should allow the tracker to tell me how far I’ve walked or run based on my step count, which would be great for treadmill/gym exercise where the GPS isn’t useful.
Finally I’ve noticed one more major advantage to the MiFit, which is activity tracking when I’m working out indoors (yoga, treadmill, group class, etc). The MiFit can’t activity track without GPS data but the YAMAY can.
