An unexpected candidate runs for the Republican Party in the U.S. Presidential elections – no, it’s not a documentary of recent events in the States, ones which we are all only too familiar with, but the premise of Brandt Legg’s latest trilogy. Author Legg sets the events in a post-Trump era where he places an unsuspecting and innocent hardware store owner, Hudson Pound, in the hands of a billionaire who wants to make him the leader of the free world. As the events proceed, Pound comes under attack, literally and figuratively, on his electoral road, which leads to some intense action scenes throughout.
The novel takes the reader on a fast-paced journey of deception and conspiracy as the protagonist and his immediate family discover the realities behind what they thought was a democratic system designed to elect the best man for the job. Add in a mysterious extremist terrorist group, which will stop at nothing to influence the results, and a dangerous personal secret Pound and two childhood friends try to keep the ever-vigilant Press, and his political opponents, from finding out, and the level of intrigue and skulduggery keep the pages turning in this tense thriller.
Like his other three series, this, book one in the ‘Capstone Conspiracy’ series, will become a must-read for fans of Legg’s novels. More than just a run-of-the-mill political thriller, ‘CapWar Election’ takes a hard and critical look at real events and questions the understanding most of us have about the way the U.S. electoral system works, whilst at the same time entertaining us with a cracking tale of corruption and double-dealing. You will find you will be thinking about this one even after the novel is finished. A great read: I’ve already started book 2.
What if every American's coveted privilege of voting a candidate into office was just pure hog wash? What if secret groups actually had the power over voters to control the outcome of an election and the economy? The day Hudson Pound went to his bank for an extension of his business loan was the last day he would be known simply as Hudson Pound, hardware store owner and local hero. That day unbelievably propelled him into being a Republican Presidential candidate at the behest of the powerful millionaire, named Arlin Vonner. Once the candidacy gets under way, the candidates start dropping like flies, at the hands of an evil domestic terror group claiming responsibility. Add to that Pound's skeletons from his childhood, a meddling popular reporter and you have all the goods for great read! Brandt Legg has written a BRILLIANT Grisham-type political thriller in CapWar Election that will make your head swirl with questions and similarities to what is actually going on in our government today. Thank goodness book 2 in this series is out. I give this masterpiece five well earned stars!
Can't say enough about this book. It's a thriller without scaring me to death, However it is keeping me awake reading, and interfering with my work as I take every spare minute to read. Also, I'm grabbing every commercial break to catch a few more pages. I even have my face buried in the book as I walk on the treadmill. Golly, Mr. Legg, you are a big distraction here. The forward warns us that we may be offended by the political views of some of the characters. Not to worry--so far, I'm fine. Author Brandt Legg has tackled a difficult subject--politics. He lays out what might happen down the road during an American presidential election if we Americans continue on our current divisive path.. That, my friends, is scary. Brandt obviously knows a thing or two about politics. You will recognize composites of all your favorite political "types," as well as touches of James Bond. As a political junkie, myself, I'm enthralled by this fictional story, which is all too true in places.
I love stories that start with an everyday sort of character that gets sucked into a whirlwind of events that get more and more exciting as the story progresses. CapWar Election is this kind of story. It starts as Hudson Pound, the owner of a small chain of hardware stores, is hoping to get a loan to prop up his failing business. And then, by a strange set of circumstances carefully planned by someone else, he is thrown into one of the most powerful positions in the world, yet the people who planned these events expect to control him all the way. And then...all kinds of things happen. What a great book! Fast-paced and hard to put down.
CapWar Election is not meant to be provocative, but even if you take it as mere fiction, it stirs thought and raises a lot of “what if” questions. What is the meaning of leadership, when a a bought-and-paid-for politician arrives at a position of power? Can such a leader find the courage to break away from the corruptive forces to which he owes his position? Can he chart an independent course of action, for himself and for the nation? “He had to stop them. There was to much to fix. He had to live.”
Written in fast pace, dynamic style, this political thriller has suspenseful ups and downs: assassination attempt, media attack on the private life of the candidate” “turns out not many people have a perfect family. it’s yet another reason for the electorate to identify with Hudson Pound, the everyman candidate.” There is also a faltered performance at a crucial debate. “With just days before the country voted, Hudson lost his first debate.”
Looking forward to read the next book in this exciting new series. Five stars.
This was such an awesome and believable read! From the very beginning when an intelligent, charming, common man—Hudson Pound--is selected by a billionaire to run for the highest office of the land, president, to the gripping conclusion, I was hooked.
The story is full of deception and a conspiracy that Hudson and his immediate family try to unravel. In the process, innocent lives are lost. The author has crafted another well-developed thriller. His knowledge of the politics is clearly displayed in this novel. Even though this is a work of fiction, it shows how much power and money can determine who wins political offices, and also the strong role they play in the future of our democracy and the entire world. The author brought it all to life and it all felt so real, especially given our current political climate. Kudos to Brandt Legg for this enjoyable, yet scary, outstanding novel! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
I'm a huge fan of Brandt Legg, and love his sci-fy series even though I was never a SF fan, so to speak. Legg's amazing talent for transcending readers into whatever scenario he creates is rather mind blowing. And I say this again, because I'm not one who searches for anything political when it comes to reading novels. Well, once again the eloquent writing pulled me in and within minutes I was unable to put down CapWar ELECTION, a novel I would have never opened if Brandt Legg had not authored it.
But, I digress: If you thought the 2016 presidential election was crazy, wait until you read this book. This novel takes a realistic, yet fictional look, at a future (sometime in the next ten years) presidential election. Things get really intense with conspiracy upon conspiracy. I could not stop turning the pages on this one, and stayed up into the wee hours to complete it. I'm now attempting to wait patiently for the next installment in this series.
Brandt Legg is a masterful writer of thrillers and his latest series, The CapStone Conspiracy, does not disappoint. I finished the first book in the series (CapWar Election) in the wee small hours of the morning, unable to put it down.
The book starts off with what appears to be a domestic terror group who are plotting the overthrow of the American government. Then, the plot switches to an Ohio hardware store owner, Hudson Pound, who will soon find himself recruited to become the next Republican candidate for President.
Conspiracy theories and dark secrets abound in this novel and it seems there is no one you can trust. The pace is fast and intense and the characters are multi-faceted.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and look forward to the next book in the series. 5 great big shiny stars!
Whew ... what a literary ride! Truly an all-consuming reading experience. I simply couldn't put it down. Very entertaining yet provocative and even alarming ... alarming in the sense that CapWar ELECTION paints a full blown portrait of American governance way out of control and corrupt beyond our wildest imagination. Author Brandt Legg reminds us at the outset that this is a work of fiction. And while it's a great story - filled with an abundance of twist-and-turns, it sure does have a loud ring of Truth to it! This really should be required reading for all voters! Not unlike the 2016 election results, this political thriller certainly serves as a national wake-up call. Our republic is on the edge and we the people just might have to fight to take it back . Though set in the future and without seeming to take sides, CapWar ELECTION is clearly influenced by recent events in its storyline. Legg also artfully utilizes historical and cultural references throughout the book. As one who has actively participated at all levels of American politics, I take my political fiction very, very seriously. Not only does CapWar ELECTION feel and sound authenic, it is a significant volume comparable to the works of Allen Drury, Robert Penn Warren,Gore Vidal, Charles W. Bailey & Fletcher Knebel - not to mention, George Orwell and Ray Bradbury! Having read Legg's previous books, I proudly nominate this as his best book thus far, and endorse it for both its entertainment and educational value. Eagerly awaiting books Two & Three!
I am a big fan of Brandt Legg and was looking forward to this book coming out.
Hudson Pound, an unsuspecting hardware store owner, is a puppet candidate in the U.S. presidential elections. The man pulling the strings, a billionaire, is looking for someone he can control in the office of the President, and Hudson fits the bill.
This is a fast-paced story with numerous plots and characters, a gripping thriller that kept me glued to the pages. As always Brandt Legg pulled me into his protagonists minds, as they weaved their way through a minefield of corruption and deceit, terrorism and power struggles.
it is an eye-opening story, capturing the imagination, but at times crossing lines of fiction and reality. Don't miss it. Highly recommended.
