Sturdy case able to hold accessories
March 7, 2017
*** Updated 2017-04-12 to reflect the new version of this case (original held 20 cartridges; updated design holds 19)
The new version removes the useless elastic straps in favor of a small velcro strap which secures the Switch console using the bottom game cartridge flap. This works very well! To accommodate this, the middle cartridge slot was changed to instead hold two MicroSD cards. 19 cartridges is a lot, and the MicroSD card storage is a welcome addition. There is also a small tab to easily lift the Switch out of the case.
I purchased the official Nintendo case (which includes screen protector), the HORI Tough Pouch, Hyperkin EVA Hard Shell, and the PDP Sheikah Eye Starter Kit cases along with this one. I returned all of them except the Butterfox.
This Butterfox case is stronger and sturdier than any of the other cases, and therefore offers better protection for the Switch. It is also the only case of the bunch which has enough room for accessories, however unfortunately the official Nintendo Switch AC adapter is too large (it's huge!) to fit in this case.
This case DOES however have enough space for everything I would want to carry with me regularly such as the following (see photos):
* Either a powerbank or a second pair of Joycons
* 2 extra Joycon straps
* USB cable
* Small charger like the 18W Pixel Charger
Notes on the Pixel charger: I ended up picking up the Google 18W USB-C Power Adapter made for Google Pixel phones, which supports the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard which the Switch uses. This charges at the full 18W (9V @ 2A confirmed with a Satechi USB-C Power Meter) which charges the Switch by itself as fast as the OEM charger, and is small enough to fit in this case! I highly recommend this as your Switch travel charger.
This case also has a non-themed exterior to detract attention which is also a plus to me (i.e. theft deterrent).
The only negative about this case is that the internal mesh pouch zipper pull touches the left Joycon when closed all the way, and could possibly scratch it. Having two zippers so that they would align in the middle, or using a string/cord instead of metal would be a welcome improvement. Of course, you could just not zip it all the way, it still closes plenty well to keep your accessories secure. Otherwise, this case is perfect for my use.
Overall, I highly recommend this case over any others currently on the market.
