Most mystery-thrillers obey certain archetypes, bringing the reader along towards a satisfying-if-expected ending. Not this one.

"The Nowhere Girls" shows off its bonafides as a mystery-thriller from the first page: riveting characters, a tension-fueled plot, and a sense of place that breathes with the fresh air of authenticity. There is little wasted space, either, as each interaction drives the novel forward--mandating that the reader hold on for the ride.

The best part? The author's refusal to abide by the normal pattern of a mystery thriller. Without availing spoilers, I'll just say that the decisions made by this author show an impressive amount of courage. And ample pay off for the reader.

Five stars, without a second thought.

There is just something about unsolved mysteries that grips just about anyone. I was one of those. I enjoyed this read Alex made a sad subject very exciting and thru in so many twists. I thought I had it figured out but then it took off in a different direction several times. I would recommend this read for those who like a good murder mystery.

I LOVED this book. I could tell it was a "good read" because I would look up at the clock and it was hours past my mealtime and I have missed few meals in my adult life time. This book has everything you could want in a solid murder mystery; it captures your attention and keeps you intrigued until the end. The book keeps you entertained and guessing; it has important twists and turns. I never had the urge to skim like so many other books that go on and on; everything was critical to the outcome. I am recommending it for our book club. There will lots to discuss.

i was entirely hooked in the first half hour of reading this extremely well written first novel. The twists and turns made it hard to put down. The local aspect was enjoyable for me as I live in the area. Well done Alex Urquhart. Keep writing.

This book is PHENOMENAL! I have been suggesting it to everyone I know. The story is so captivating that you will just keep turning the page and not even notice how much time has past. The imagery used perfectly describes the coastal town where you can feel like you are there and seeing everything through your own eyes. I couldn't wait to finish the book but I didn't want it end either. Now just patiently waiting the next!

I loved this book! It's description of Newport is spot on! The author uses real street names, restaurants, landmarks, and the never ending presence of rainy weather. The only thing I wished for was if the real murdered girls in Newport had closure like they do in the book. Perhaps this will compel some one to speak up and help that happen. Kodus to the author for his first book. Hoping for a sequel!

Having been in high school during the time the book takes place, it was very accurate to actual events. This made the book even more intriguing and interesting. It was tough to put down. It was one of those books that you not only don't want to put down, but can't wait until you pick it up again. I can't wait for the next book, his writing style is incredible.

An enthralling first novel, loosely based on an unsolved string of murders that happened from 1984-1993 in Lincoln County, Oregon. Though he has changed victim names, he has retained enough of the crime details, place names, and local milieu to make this story eerily real to readers. Urquhart opens the plot with a present-day murder, throws in flashbacks to previous crimes, and keeps the pace fast and furious, but still manages to do a wonderful job developing his characters. The reader is exposed to many different points of view (newspaper reporter, victims, private investigator, even the psychopathic killer) but the story is consistent and not confusing. While this novel does contain violence, adult situations and language, it’s not overly graphic and would be suitable for young adults.

I had been on a long hiatus from casual reading but this got me back into the world of fiction! I finished this book in 3 or 4 sittings; once I started I had to know how it ended. It turns into a real thriller and actually living where it takes place makes it even more eerie. Props to Alex Urquhart, can't wait for your next book!
