This stick works effortlessly and perfectly so far. I just bought it for myself for Christmas so if it fails within the first year I will update. I am having so much fun experimenting with this cooker! I have made poached eggs, omelettes ( in a zip lock, lol), double thick pork chops, steak and veggies so far and it all turned out fantastic! It is large, but that means you can use a huge pot for a big roast and you can put plenty if water in so it doesn't evaporate before the thing is done.
You can download the Joule app and follow the Chef Step recipes for every type of food. You don't need a cookbook if you have any access to the internet. Any large grocery store has zip lock roasting bag like the ones for Turkey brining for large cuts of meat. Just immerse in the sous vide pot up to the zipper and close it up with no need for a vacuum sealer. If you use hot tap water to fill your pot it will get up (or down) to temp within about 5 minutes.
I can't see where spending the extra money for one of famously hyped other brand name units would make any difference in the outcome of your food. As far as not having the feature of controlling by Wi-Fi, you don't need it. I think that would only confuse things for me personally. I love this thing just the way it is. Simple with easy to follow directions and controls!

Worked well until it stopped working and wouldn't turn back on. I do not recommend it, I'm going to have to try my luck with manufacturer's warranty.

Edit: The company was prompt to respond to my request and is replacing the unit. With customer service this good, I am happy to recommend it. Temperature control is great, and it's easy to use.

UPDATE: I received my replacement unit today (4/17/2018) and the temperature is dead on! (See 2nd picture) Bumped up my rating to 5 stars for the customer service follow-up.
So I took the company's word that they "worked hard on getting the digital thermometer to be precise"... well, they're not working hard enough. I just unboxed mine and the temperature is way off. I have two other thermometers that register within a couple degrees of each other. The Avalon Bay temp is off by over 30 degrees (F). Guess I'll be sending this back. I gave this review 10 stars because of the price, but I can't recommend something that will require a second thermometer.

I am happy with purchase. Have used for an entire week and made soft boiled eggs, chicken breasts, new york strip & corned beef. All came out amazing and meats cooked around 2 hrs. The corned beef was made 135F for 48 hours in an ice chest and covered with floating styrofoam to lessen the evaporation. Good quality zip lock bags are fine and there are methods to get all the air out immersed in water. I have a vacuum sealer as well but not necessary and don't like the checkered pattern the bags leave on one side of meat. The clamp used to hold the immersion cooker is flimsy and the design is cheap but it works and have used cutting boards to elevate the cooker and clamp it to side of a pot. This unit is very good for the money and controls are easy to use. Press and hold Start, unit comes on preset at 130F and timer @ 8:00 Hrs. Press Temp or timer function and increase or decrease using + or -, press start and unit begins timers when temp is reached.

Pros, Come with a water packet of zip bags and a stainless rack to hold smaller bags upright.
Setup is really simple.
Nicely built. Easy to clean.

Cons.
After setting the temp and duration. and pressing start. it then get up to temperature but you have to press start again.
This is especially annoying when it will take sometimes 20-30 min to get up to 180F From 100F water.
You just cant set it and leave it. You have to wait for it to start beeping and press start again.

My fiancée knew I wanted a Sous Vide and got me this one for my birthday. It was not what I would have gotten for myself (I would have gotten the immersion circulator) but I am very happy with it nonetheless.

It does exactly what you'd want - temperature control and a timer. The Timer works in half hour increments and the Temperature can be controlled in either Fahrenheit or Celsius.

It comes with a bunch of BPA-free plastic bags as well.

The only reason why I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 is because it takes up a lot of space when not in use - an immersion circulator is easier to store. That said, I'm very satisfied with the product and would definitely recommend.

I have cooked a whole bunch of things with this and all have come out fantastic. I like that I don't need an app to control it, but now that I've used it, I can see how the Anova with the app might come in handy. I'd give it another star if the signal beeps were louder and the screen to set time and temperature was a little more touch sensitive. Over all, it's a cost-effective way to explore a great cooking technique.

Does a a great job for the money. It cooks the food I used evenly all the way through. It does take a while to warm up and the temperature does drop a little bit. I fixed the temperature dropped issue by just setting the temperature one degree higher and that fix the issue for the slight changes. In full disclosure I did return the item and purchased a circulator. I turned in this item because I wanted to have the versatility of changing pot sizes and a device that heated water quicker. Mind you this device is only $80 and the device I upgraded to cost $200. I would highly recommend this device if you are first getting into sous vide and aren't wanting to spend a bunch of money because it works right.

This is a really nifty unit and an excellent value. The first and foremost concern is...is it accurate? According to my instant read thermometer, it is indeed, within a half degree. The second concern...is it easy to use? I think the controls are very intuitive, so yes, it is easy to use. As a bonus, it comes with a basic sous vide cookbook, adequate directions and 5 cooking bags. I really love this unit and really do not see a need to buy a more expensive unit. Highly recommended.

The price is right, the product works as designed, and the food cooked has been perfect... what's not to like? I originally bought a sous vide stick, not knowing it was actually bigger (taller) than I expected. I didn't have a taller pot to take the stick and didn't want to spend money on another pot. So I returned the stick and ordered this one instead. It meets all my expectations, the water keeps a constant temperature, and there is no humming noise as compared to using the stick. I am sold!
