Many kinds of healing
February 3, 2018
I was occasionally disturbed by modern languge used by characters who had not had an opportunity to learn the expressions involved, and by misuse of similar words such as 'effect' and 'affect'. In addition, I was frustrated now and again by some immortal beings' refusal to employ the maturity they must have developed simply through a (very) long life's experiences. These things resulted in my giving the book 4 stars, rather than 5.
Concepts like love and sacrifice, healing and destruction, choice and fate, in a variety of situations and forms are fairly overwhelming subjects for YA fantasy. On the other hand, what better audience could there be than those on the brink of their adult lives? The humor was engaging. It lightened the mood of the reader and gave the characters a touch of realism. I came to care very much about several of them; almost all of them had more than two dimensions. These books are absolutely worth reading.
