I've used Gillette brand blades for well over 30 years. A number of years ago I participated in a 3-month Gillette consumer test of a new razor and blade system and have a pretty good idea of what to look for in a razor system and how to rank them. I've always considered them the best on the market, especially after every once in a while trying another brand and then coming back to Gillette.

However, the pricing on Gillette's blades has become completely unreasonable. Moreover the durability of the newer Fusion blades leaves a lot to be desired which may be an indication of quality control problems. I can rarely get more than 5 shaves out of a Fusion blade before it goes dull, resulting in a poor and uncomfortable shave.

The last Gillette price increase was the trigger for me to again investigate an alternative brand. I tried a couple off brands and wasn't satisfied. Then I came across the Schick Hydro 5. I'm in love with it. This shaving system provides a superior shaving experience at a very reasonable cost. The blades are significantly less expensive than Gillette and they last twice as long. I can usually get 10 shaves out of a single blade before there is a decline in performance. The Schick Hydro handle has a different weight and balance than the Fusion and this took a few days to get used to but now I find it as good, if not better, than the Gillette. The razor head seems to glide more evenly on my skin, even when shaving against the grain. And it has a clever little flip guard at the top that allows you to expose the top blades for trimming beneath your nose and other tight spots.

If you'd asked me 6 months ago if I'd be using a razor not made by Gillette my answer would have been "no." Schick Hydro has changed my mind and I couldn't be happier. I'm getting a better shave at a cost much less than Gillette.

This "system" sure does lubricate your face. The shaving itself feels smooth, but you don't realize the shave isn't as close as you thought until all the shaving gel is washed off. Oh, it's feels great, but there was still a tiny bit of stubble left on my neck and chin after many strokes --and I don't have a heavy beard. The bank of blades is also so large that I'd have to continue buying cheap one- or two-blade razors occasionally to shave closely around my goatee and tidy up around my mustache. I also cut myself for the first time in a very long time with the 5. Schick needs to include a blade cover or cap of some kind for travel. I'm going to exchange these for the Hydro 3 blades.

I've been using Shick Hydro 5 for a few years and it's been great. I do not own the newer version with the gyrating end, so I bought this one again and it's the same best shave I always get. Never had a problem with Hydro 5.

I had used the same blade for a few months before I decided to get new ones. Even then, I didn't "need" new ones, I just wondered what it'd be like. (Smoother shave opposed to before)

a GREAT beginner's razor. GREAT for young men to start with!

a note, the extra lube at first it puts on your face may be a bit hard to wipe off in the end, but it quickly disperses after a few uses.

This is the best razor I ever had. I read the reviews a woman wrote here on shaving her legs and it works with no cuts or nicks or scratches. Great for shaving pubic hairs

I was tired of the woman's razors getting dull quickly and being too sharp in the beginning. I have very sensitive skin and tend to get razor burn easily but this razor is great. I also shave out of the shower sometimes with coconut oil and so far so good!

Best shaver I have ever had (I have used several different types) and the blades last a very, very long time. Tip: Perfect shaving soap is Miracle Soap II (and probably other soap from same company too).

I wish I could give this razor 6 stars. I have never had a razor as comfortable as this razor. I've tried a lot of them over the years. I found that a straight razor with a premium very sharp blade would cut me at times. I even tried a Harry razor and it feels like shaving with a brick when you compare it to this blade. I use Taylor of Bond Street shaving cream purchased here, and a badger brush to put it on, so I take my shaving seriously. And when you add in this razor, boy you have something.

You can also buy a four pack of blades on Amazon for only $2 each! That also makes this a really great buy.

Favorite razor hands down. Tried dollar shave club "executive" razor but the single edge blade kept cutting me. This one does the trick and one razor lasts me at least 3 weeks (I shave every other day)

This is my second purchase of the same razor. Don't get me wrong it is a fantastic product and the shave is exceptional. However it eats up batteries. Everytime I put a battery in there even if I don't use it it goes dead in a week or two. I had to buy rechargeable batteries to solve this problem. You can also buy high efficiency low drain batteries but rechargeable is a more economical way to go.

Purchased this as a little side Christmas present for my boyfriend. Incredibly, he doesn't use a 5 blade! I don't have a beard, but I am a shaver and have used a range of men's and women's shaving products. I learned a long time ago that this is not an area to be thrifty and Schick is the best. Use a 5 blade, You're worth it :*
