I've been working through these suggestions daily. It's proven useful for my mid-career reboot. I haven't been in a formal academic setting for quite some time, and the structure and organization of this approach is working well for me.

The book is highly opinionated, based on the author's 25 years of experimentation. It builds the kind of foundation that is easy to build on. The basic idea is better concentration leads to the ability to memorize. Rational work can build on this foundation of memorization. Speed reading depends on the foundation of memorized learning and concentration to allow the student to explore a domain more widely. The book continues to build.

If you're looking for a quick fix, this book is not for you. This book is for building a strong intellectual foundation, integrating knowledge, recalling information more quickly. It's a lot of work, but I find that it's producing strong results.

I love this book! My whole 19 years of school and I've never ever ONCE been taught how to study OR learn! This has become frustrating into adulthood as I have many interests that require study outside of academia. But then after reading this book among others I learned that you for real never really stop learning. The art of studying is a skill and like with any skill it must be mastered First before anything else; if you want to go into a particular trade or skill, you're gonna have to study it; if you want to go into business selling a specific good or product, you're gonna have to study! You catch my drift. Studying&Research is something like math that just can't be avoided in life. But don't even get me started on the math part yet, yuck! Rod places a heavy emphasis on meditation because it has been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN that meditation speeds up the development and process of cognitive brain and executive functioning. Side Bar the prefrontal cortex of our brain or the "new brain" is still a baby no more than 3million years old! And meditation was created to potentially accelerate that process of development. I love how Rod goes into specifics and even recommends further reading on the back. It's written in superb order, giving the continuing learner a road map as to where to start on this journey of learning how to learn. I read one review of a mother practicing these techniques herself and subliminally to her very young daughter which is such a refreshing thing to read. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm not even done! God I love learning! Another good book in conjunction with this one is called Make It Stick. Together you or your child will be an unstoppable powerhouse learner.
No I was not paid to give this review. I'm just a very good writer and honest person
Your Welcome

Best manual on study techniques all in one small book!
This really is a "Manual" not just the title of the book, there is no BS or wasted space and it is ALL solid techniques!

This book is an excellent guide to the foundations of how to study properly. Starting with concentration, building up to memory and going even further, I have no reservations in recommending The Manual to others who want to increase their intellectual prowess.

Very well put together.

Some may say it's not new material, regardless, it is the manner in which it is delivered and assembled along with detailed instruction; that makes this book a valuable tool

This is not really a study habit/note taking technique book for college students. A more fitting title would be Memory Training Through Meditation. If you don't believe in mind-emptying meditation using mantras, this isn't for you. Too spiritualistic for an academic like me.

Not really a lot of information that you can't find in a multitude of other books out there, but there was some good points
