Top critical review
Good, but room for improvement
December 20, 2016
First off, this unit does its job well. I have it installed on a 240 volt Ditra Heat cable and sensor probe, it has been working fine for three months. Scheduling and preheat work fine. It's a good product that will work as advertised.
I do have some criticism, and it is primarily around the screen. It suffers tremendously from burn-in. I'm not sure how people use the device with the screensaver enabled, which is a shame because many of us upgraded to this for the color screen, which seems to ghost. With the screensaver disabled, the screen turns off completely after two minutes, otherwise the "screensaver" shows the time and temperature. It took about a week before I noticed that the static screensaver text would show up as green ghosts on other parts of the interface. The photo I'm including that has the ghosting circled is after switching off the screensaver two months back. Most of the ghosting around the center of the screen has cleared up, but some remains. I'd almost prefer a monochrome screen that I can leave on, because I miss glancing at it when I walk by.
The screen is also a resistive type touchscreen, meaning there's a sheet of plastic material over the screen and has the slight sensation of pressing a bubble when you operate it. They probably don't have the margins to include a nice smartphone style screen at their volumes, but looking at my Ecobee 3 HVAC thermostat, which has a capacitive screen and no burn-in makes me think they could have done better.
