Pros: I bought this taking all the questionable reviews with a grain of salt. I've had 3 smokes and 2 "blank smokes" testing of this device with no serious issue. I'm using a LG G5 with android 7.0. I am able to get it to pair via Bluetooth and hold my connection fine. It came with four probes for a great prices (witch was the tipping point that sold me on this). There were a few times the it didn't appear to connect via Bluetooth (after pairing) but when I opened the app, it connected and worked fine if it was available. I have two smokers and plan on weekly "test" to confirm it's still functioning well.
Cons: I wish the app had a "ambient/chamber" mode that allowed you to set a high/low range for cooking temp in the smoker
Other thoughts: Bluetooth has come along way, but it runs on the 2.4GHz range. For prospective, so does all wireless networks (there is some 5.0 out there, but it has 2.4 fallback), Most wireless mouse and keyboards, any RF remotes around your house (Roku), or other random devices your neighbors might also have. All this can impair range, however I have all of the above and no issues.
Also Bluetooth range is defined by it's version. If your phone/tablet has lower/older Bluetooth version, the connection will fall back to the range allowed by the lower Bluetooth standard. Depending on the above factors, you can have direct line of site, and still have interference from other devices or not have the range advertised. I haven't tested long distances, but my bed room is on the second floor and my smoker is just out side our walk out basement. works great from there.
