The beginning of this book is rather stunning and captivating. An unidentified young woman goes to a questionable part of town to deliver some documents. Who is the woman, what are the documents and to whom is she delivering them? What's going on? Unfortunately the delivery doesn't go as planned and the woman is brutally murdered.

Enter DS (Detective Sergeant) Brian McDone of the Preston Police Department. McDone has lots of personal problems that make it difficult for him to relate to the colleagues in his department including his boss and his partner Cassy. There are lots of suspects and twists and turns that keep you wondering what exactly has and will take place. McDone tries to deal with his significant problems, his uncertain relationship with Cassy and solve the crime at the same time.

It's interesting to me to read British (I think it was British) mysteries because of the differences between how things work in the United States. I found myself caring for the characters in the book and looking forward to the final answers. I recommend this book to anyone. One warning, however. Without giving away the ending of the book, it did make me rather sad; I wish it had ended differently.

I love reading mystery books, and have always been one to love to read anything with mystery or even crime in it. It brings out suspense in any book, and keeps you wanting to read more as the story goes on and on. This was a great story to read, and would recommend it to anyone.

All I got from this book was a whining and needy police detective with an overbearing boss and an uninteresting partner who consistently botched a murder investigation. The book was more about the detective's screwed up life than the investigation of a murder, I had to struggle to keep reading. Even the ending was bad. Maybe his next venture will fair better but at this point not willing to give it a try yet. Would not recommend this book as a measure of this author's talent as a writer.

This book is my first experience with this author. The book kept my interest for the most part and the story line was interesting. I had difficulty accepting the extent of the police officer's mental issues without someone noticing and getting him help, and there are multiple twist and turns toward the end of the novel; perhaps two or three too many. I finally began expecting another twist each time which lessened their dramatic impact. This is my first read of this author and I will probably read another of the McDone series.

Brian is an unsympathetic character. He doesn't appeal to me. Way too many words about his supposed alcoholism. I will not look for more about him.

I liked reading this book. It kept me guessing right to the end with all the twists and turns. Mcdone is a very interesting character.

Sorry to the author , but I didn't finish the book. I was distracted with the detectives troubles taking a front seat at times to the cases at hand. Might just be my on personal preferences..

Ryan Casey proves that a crime story doesn't have to be a large book!! In just around 400 pages, this book kept me constantly involved. A murder mystery that keeps evolving, not a clue, who the real person is, who murdered a young woman!! Not until the very end!!
A MUST READ!!

The characters are interesting and definitely complex. I found myself angry at times with the main character and heart broken for him at other times. The story had many twists and turns which definitely keeps the reader guessing how it will all pull together. Interesting British investigation.
