5.0 out of 5 starsTwo years later, this is still one of the best films in my collection
November 17, 2014
This is one of the best films I've ever seen, not just because it's a fun action film, filled with characters that I've grown to love, but because it was the first of its kind, setting the bar for other multiple-character franchises. It's a first, and because of this it absolutely has its flaws, but it's definitely a game changer.

Despite having seven lead characters (counting all Avengers plus Loki), everyone got at least a few moments of screen time devoted to their development. With seven leads, that's pretty amazing. We have the quiet moments, the little gestures and phrases that have been picked apart time and again by the fans that have granted a depth to the film that wouldn't have been possible if this were the first time we met any of these characters, and that's the real beauty of Avengers. It's a team-up flick, but it's a team-up of characters we've all been introduced to before. (Even if you hadn't seen any of the previous films, there was a sort of pop culture awareness around most of them by the time it was released that you'd be hard pressed to go in blind about anyone except the characters who didn't have their own film yet and were, however regrettably, less important because of it.)

Combine that with a well-loved director who isn't afraid to sucker punch his audience, and you've got a perfect mix for a film that doesn't just thrill audiences with fight scenes that are larger-than-life, but gets people to invest emotionally in a fictional world. Avengers was released more than two years ago, but the film is still being picked apart and very much alive in the hearts and minds of the fans because of Marvel's expert world-building. In every show, every film, you see threads that lead back (or forward) to other events in the Universe, and it's this sort of continuity that the fans love. They pick up on every little reference, read into every word of dialogue, every prop placement, every choice that the creative team makes, and this is what has made Avengers so successful. It stands up to that test, and even with ten films under Marvel's belt, there's still very few inconsistencies. (Especially when you compare it to the next largest Marvel franchise, X-Men, which has some major timeline problems around Wolverine.)

All in all, this is a film that should be in every collection because it's not just great, it's revolutionary.

3.0 out of 5 starsEntertaining but not 5 stars by any means.

If you are just looking for a something that is fairly entertaining, has a bit of spectacular special effects and is pretty family friendly then Marvels Avengers is likely your cup of tea. If this sort of thing makes you giddy, then you will probably love the movie and see it as a 5 star event. Its a good romp of a view but the story is shallow, the character too campy and the cliches while providing a good chuckle at times don't do much to punch up what is really a lack luster and all too predictable story line. It should be mentioned too that it is helpful for understanding the story line (unless you are a dyed in the wool Marvel comics aficionado) to have seem the previous movies for Iron Man, Thor and Captain American. If you didn't catch it I omitted the Hulk here as the characters demeanor for the Hulk was so inconsistent that it almost hurt to have seen the previous Hulk movies. Some people will probably like this new character portrayal but having been with the big guy through, comics, movies and TV shows over the past 40+ years I personally felt it was the worst Hulk portrayal I had seen yet. In addition to this list it's not a great surprise that two new character are thrown at you as there are plenty of Marvel heroes to choose from. To sum up its good, but it's just not great. So not wanting to be too nit picky I have to close by saying even given the short comings of the movie, and there are some, you could do a lot worse. So grab some popcorn, your favorite comfy chair, set your expectations to medium and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 starsShut up and enjoy this movie

I grew up reading Marvel comics in the 70s, and I love this movie. I've watched it 3 or 4 times. The characters are witty, the dialog is fast-paced. With this many stars, it's tough to give them all enough screen time but the directorial style of flipping from the viewpoint of one major character to another is brilliant. You get to see the same scene from multiple viewpoints, and it really is gripping.

Yeah, there is some suspension of disbelief, and it's never clear whether the bad guys are robots or organic or some mixture of the two, but who cares. It's a visual feast.

For me, the high point was... wait, first some back story. Whenever I watch movies with my kids, I am always "getting" some inside joke that they have no frame of reference for, and I have to explain to them, "see, when I was a kid, there was this TV show, and there was some character who always said...". Recently I bought a Looney Tunes collection for them to watch, and among the collection are a lot of road runner cartoons. And when Tony Stark says, "What Loki's got is an Acme Dynamite Kit, and it's going to blow up in his face", my kids were all, "Dad! We got that reference!" Which I find especially ironic because in this very same movie, there's a reference to the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz, and Cap America gets very excited and says, "I got that! I understand that reference!". Life imitates art. You gotta love it.

5.0 out of 5 starsAvengers Assemble!
September 26, 2018

One of my favorite of the Marvel Universe (mainly because of Loki). Lots and lots goes all in this movie, and not all in the action. Clues galore are thrown in and make this a come together and fight for Earth winner. Plus, did I mention Loki??? Never has a villain been so much fun and yet so sinister at the same time, no doubt due entirely to Tom Hiddleston's excellent acting and portrayal. I actually felt sorry for Loki a couple of times, and THAT is a feat of great acting when one feels sorry for a 'bad guy'. It didn't and won't win Oscars for plot, story, or overall, but it's definitely a must see before Infinity War, or neither movie will have as much meaning.

5.0 out of 5 starsLove the Avenger team!

The earliest Marvel movies are my favorites, before they got so dark and conflicted. I love the teamwork of all the heroes together in this movie. I have watched it many times and decided I should own it, but had to wait until the price came down, some. Every time I watch it I see or hear something I missed before. Great characters, wonderful acting and lots of fun and action. Fun popcorn movie and a nice way to get away from everyday life for a short while.

5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing Start To Combined MCU

This movie is a wonderful starting point for the avengers franchise. I love how they are able to bring the different individual stories together into one cohesive movie. I also like how throughout the movie some of the dialogue forces you to wonder what they are talking about and thus encouraging you to go and watch the individual character movies to get a better understanding of the whole thing. The CGI in this movie is very good and even when watching at higher resolutions the graphics do not disappoint.

This is a wonderful movie for a Friday or Saturday night and I am excited to watch the rest of the series!

5.0 out of 5 starsOutstanding!!!
November 1, 2012

This four-disc pack was worth every penny (I think it was approximately $28 total for me but because I pre-ordered the Combo Pack I got a $5 discount later).

When I opened the pack it contained a DVD, a 3D Blu-ray disc, a 2D Blu-ray disc, and a digital copy. I immediately loaded the digital copy to my iMac, Apple laptop, and iPhone via iTunes. No problems with following the instructions contained within the disc pack.

I played the 3D version Blu-ray disc and I watched the entire movie. Really, the 3D was nice in certain scenes but for the most part, the Avengers wasn't much of a 3D spectacle. I think that the 3D version of "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey was more impressive from a 3D perspective. But that aside, I watched the Avengers in 2D and it was fine as well.

There was this feature called "Second Screen" that allows you to watch the movie while giving you background information on characters and scenes via your iPhone and iPad. It took forever to figure out how to get this feature to work as the instructions are not very clear. But since this was an "extra" and not the main reason that I bought the Combo Pack then it wasn't such a big deal once I figured it out.

Other than figuring out how to get "Second Screen" to work, I enjoyed everything else (deleted scenes, director's commentary, etc.) immensely. There could be no better Christmas gift for the Marvel super-hero fan than this Combo Pack. Also there are other options to order an Avengers poster, etc. (I'd pass on the poster. I ordered it and it's cheesy. It's something that a five-year might like.).

I'm not much into rock music so I can't give you a review on the soundtrack album included in the Combo Pack. But still this is a good deal for the buck!

5.0 out of 5 starsEpic, exhilerating, heartfelt and humorous myth-making
May 6, 2013
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
I am a huge fan of the Christopher Nolan 'Dark Knight' trilogy...but, nowhere is it written that all legends have to be dark paths to redemption. Sometimes, the greatest myths and legends are simply the kind of tales that demand to be re-told...generation after generation.

Joss Whedon's 'Avengers' ascends the icy slopes of the superhero Olympus; and lays claim to that pinnacle and its throne.
There are layers of earthbound and extraterrestrial treachery threatening the human race; but, their potential saviors often distracted (and, hilariously) by a variety of rivalries that run the gamut from sibling, to battle of the sexes all the way to 'my hammer's bigger than yours'.

What makes this cocktail really fizz are the expert proportions poured by Director Whedon: the cold calculations of Hawkeye and Black Widow, duplicity of Nick Fury and Loki, the stalwart heroisms of Captain America and Thor, wild card unpredictability that is the Hulk and the champagne patter of Iron Man make for a highly addictive and intoxicating mix.

The talented cast rises to the the challeng of a witty, juggernaut script; and, the final elements of eye-tickling effects and a rousing score are what all combine to earn my (very rare) perfect 5-star score.

Its a rare movie that makes me feel absolutely satisfied at the end; while immediately yearning for the next adventure. "The Avengers" is truly the stuff of legends.

Incoherent Drivel
4.0 out of 5 starsBluray Case Broke Due To Being Literally Overstuffed with Content
June 26, 2016
Format: Blu-rayVerified Purchase
The movie itself is awesome, and it's great to be able to purchase a version that comes with a DMA copy included, but the Four Disc verson actually broke in shipment (while sealed, mind you) due to the ridiculous amount of content in the case. There are four discs, but there are so many inserts from Disney and Marvel on top of the Music and DMA inserts that it's literally overstuffed.

The case doesn't lock closed anymore, so I'm really glad that it came with the dust cover, because that's all that's holding it together.

Otherwise, it's a great movie. Just thought it was worth noting.
