Same original Briggs part, much cheaper than box stores
April 21, 2014
As a DIY'er who buys his push mowers used on craigslist (usually 4 years old) for 1/5 the new cost, I have spent a while cleaning up and maintaining several types of mowers. This filter was for a Craftsman mower with a 6.5HP Briggs (now marketed as a 6.75 and sometimes even a 7). I prefer these to the oil sponge design both in terms of efficacy and ease of maintenance. I typically put a little Vaseline on the gasket when I install these to make sure 100% of the air passes through the filter medium, even in rough service. This little trick allows the user to just wipe off the goo on the housing when you change filters rather than cleaning up what otherwise would have gotten around the filter in the housing.
NOTE: IF YOU WILL BE OWNING YOUR MOWER A LONG TIME, THESE ARE ALSO AVAILABLE ON AMAZON IN A MULTI PACK THAT BRINGS THE PRICE TO ABOUT $3/UNIT, WAY CHEAPER THAN BIG CHAIN STORES.
