I just finished taking the real exam today. I'll echo what others have said. This is not representative of the real thing. The real exam was much easier. Having said that, I do think this book is great prep for the exam. Just don't be too discouraged if you try to simulate test conditions with this book. Put it another way, if you can finish this practice exam in 8 hours with a passing score, then the real exam will be cake. My recommendation is to treat this book as a practice problems book. Use it to gauge how well you're understanding the concepts. If you want a more representative test, the NCEES version is spot on.

I agree with the other review that this is WAY harder than the actual exam. But it should be. If you can master the topics in this book, you'll be ready for the exam. If nothing else, you'll be used to far harder problems than you'll see during the PE.

This is a good place to start for PE preparation. I think the questions were a little outdated for it to be a final practice exam or for it to serve as a good "in exam reference" but it was excellent for figuring out what topics I needed to spend more or less time with.

I took this book and a fluids book to the PE exam in April 2016. I don't think I had to open the fluids book as most of the information I needed was in this Reference Book.

I believe this book does a great job of covering any material you will see during the exam.

I took the Sample NEECS exam a month before this one and scored 50% (I made a ton of stupid mistakes). Almost 80 hours of studying later I took this exam hoping to improve my score. Right away I knew this was FAR harder than the actual test is going to be. Most of the problems I had only the vaugest idea of how to do (unlike on the NEECS practice exam I took a month earlier). The few that were in my depth area (Mech Design) during the breadth portion were much harder than I would expect to see on any breadth portion and probably not on a depth portion either. I looked at one problem on the breadth portion and right away knew all the steps to solve it but was thinking that this is going to take me about 10-15 minutes to plow through even knowing exactly what to do from the start. This is a monster and if you can get better than 50% on this than you should smoke the real exam. I gave up on it after 2 hours having gotten less than half the problems I attempted wrong (I checked at the 2 hour point out of frustration). I'll get back to this if my study schedule allows but I moved on to the 6 minute solutions books. They are much closer to NEECS questions while still somewhat challenging. Buy this if you just want more tough practice problems to do. It'll kick your but as a sample exam.

I sat for the actual PE exam in April of 2015 with the expectation that this Practice Exam was significantly harder. The actual exam may have been a bit easier; but, I didn't do was well as I believe that I would have had I assumed that this Practice Exam was equivalent. After receiving my results and diagnostic report, I studied this Practice Exam thoroughly. I sat for the exam again in October 2015 and was surprised to find out that the actual exam was very well represented by this Practice Exam, specifically, the afternoon problems. This Practice Exam does include morning problems that were a bit more in depth; but, in general, you will be much better prepared for the PE exam if you use THIS as your standard for the test. If you can pass this, you will have a much higher likelihood of passing the real thing. If you base your expectations for the PE exam on the NCEES practice exam, you may still pass; but, in my opinion, you will be less likely to. Are you a risk taker or do you want to maximize your likelihood of success? That is the question that you need to ask yourself.
