What do you get when you enter the worlds of Native American and far eastern mysticism, theology and Jewish wisdom, a disgruntled and naive transportation worker who shoots for the stars while exploring his creativity through competing Columbian drug cartels? And the Floridian doctor who looses his license but not his entrepreneurial zeal, or the cadre of ex-cons creating new cons under the guise of charitable good. Then there are the lawyers; a naive recent graduate embarking on his own, who seeks rabbinical wisdom to guide him through his moral obstacles, a young, impotent, guilt ridden prosecutor with a past that haunts his every move, a retired, sex starved ex-prostitute who thrives on criminal law, or the young idealist who wears the white hat in halting unlawful practices, finding fun in his making a ton of money in the process. Well, you get Heroes or Despicable Scoundrels. Miller has woven rich characters with diverse backgrounds into his story and successfully crafted a tasty gumbo of religion & morality, humor & intrigue, lightly seasoned with lessons in the law. I recommend this book as a fun read for all to enjoy.
Steven Lee Miller examines important ethical questions in a unique and creative fashion. The wisdom of the experienced guides the mind of the uninitiated. I felt like I was the young person who was asked to decide what is right and what is wrong. And truly, I was perplexed with the complexity of the problems. As I followed Steven Lancaster's challenges, I had the opportunity to reflect on events in my own life. Miller's characters, especially Thornton Howard III, made me wish that I had him as my mentor. I think each reader will have their own unique reaction to this work based on their life experiences. For me, the novel reminded that when were young we aren't always equipped to see how others are capable of such incredible scams.
Mr. Miller took me on a wild, but enjoyable ride. Interesting characters, dilemmas and life choices. I could relate in a positive and negative way. Familiar locations make this read even that much more fun. You will not be disappointed.
