Not the series conclusion I was hoping for

I enjoy Kristen Proby's novels and this series was fine (not as great as others of hers) but this conclusion was a let down for me. I was really looking forward to Rafe and Annika's story, especially having gotten glimpses of them in the other books. And while the book had a good start, it went downhill pretty quickly, took a lot of the focus off the main characters and left a lot of loose ends! Would have preferred that the story stuck with the one couple and their only issue rather than suddenly have several that weren't that exciting.
In the beginning, Annika is being blackmailed with some horrific photos and she's resisting Rafe. The blackmail scheme ends very early with no information to how the photos were taken and why (even the very brief explanation at the end let a lot to be desired!) So that was very anti-climatic. When Annika is cleaning out her house and finds her late husband's safe, there is money and a phone number mentioned but then those are quickly forgotten.
Annika and Rafe have a tragic past but they never really talk about it! And she goes from pushing him away to being in a relationship rather quickly. Would have been nice to have had them talk about the break-up and hear his side.
And then there were the annoying side stories with the other mafia families... just crowding and already busy premise and it adds nothing.
I guess it's entertaining to read and find out how the series ends?
