Shallow Characters/Muddy Plot
July 5, 2019
I found the book lacking in character development which in turn greatly reduced any thrill factor. Literally, all of the characters seemed pretty much like the same person. Maybe two people spread across five characters. And I got so tired that on almost every other page, one character or another would shout, "Jesus!" at some less than scary thing. "Jesus! It's only a deer." "Jesus! Was that a bat?" "Jesus! This beer is warm." "Jesus! It's just rats." Either the author needs to expand his choice of exclamations or he is a hard core Southern Baptist. I suspect the former since there aren't any Amen!'s in the book.
When bad stuff started to happened and things started getting dicey for our friends, the plot line would come to a screeching halt and someone would have an existential crisis. OK, I skipped over a few parts here in the book. I really didn't think it was appropriate to pause the story while a couple of characters works out relationship issues and a lack of sex life. Huh? Or another character's lamenting their career choice and future. It's seems to me these things could have waited until after they are out of the current deadly situation.
Didn't care for the story much. It could have been better with more defined characters. The first chapter of the book was great. Wish that kind of energy would have carried throughout.
