5.0 out of 5 starsThe Brutal Satire of Superhero Worship That Everyone Needs Right Now
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019
Are you sick of the soulless and formulaic Hollywood drivel that endlessly glorifies and celebrates superheros? If you see another cut-and-paste superhero action movie with one-dimensional characters whose only purpose is to kick, punch, and explode their way through every problem, will you puke your guts out? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see superheros depicted as actual human beings, with all the flaws and absurdities that it entails? Then look no further, my fellow cynics. The Boys is exactly what you're looking for.
And this show is more than just a satire of superhero worship. Because underneath it all, superheros are really a thinly veiled substitute for a wide range of authority figures and social icons: Politicians, athletes, artists, business leaders, philanthropists. Anyone and everyone that mass culture looks up to. This show is about highlighting the gulf between the idealized public images that great power puts forth and what it really gets up to behind the scenes.
So if you're in the mood for something totally different, subversive, and compelling, then check out The Boys. Because this one is destined to become a cult classic.
