Top critical review
Mediocre, mother land phoning, mostly unusable.
December 27, 2019
I got it with the only intention to use in my personal quite extensive ONVIF CCTV network. I do not care about nor tested recording or motion detection or mailing or P2P.
But there are a few point that I believe any buyer would like to know:
1: Basic method of reading QR and using app to connect and find camera is 100% failure for me. It simply does not work, not with Apple nor with Android.
2: Novice (here-second) WiFi setup method: With very poor explanation in manual and never seeing such thing before, this camera has ACOUSTICAL MODEM for WiFi setup: you enter WiFi properties into the app, make sure camera slowly blinks blue and press send, kind of like old phone line modem, it will make your phone emit very unpleasant, 100% loud, near top of the audible frequencies chirps that camera's mic picks up and use to receive datagram for WiFi settings. Took me couple hours to figure it out. Manual is no help as I doubt is has any explanation but I'm not sure as print is so small that I was not able to read most of it. On success blue slow blink will switch back to red. There is no other indication that WiFi successfully connected.
3: After you manage to connect to your WiFi - find new DHCP client IP in your router and use any browser to alter any settings of the camera. I did not use apps any further because ... see below.
4: ONVIF disabled by default. You need to login through browser because app does not have ONVIF settings. I also have to uncheck "ONVIF check", otherwise NVR not able to authenticate with camera.
5: Camera does not have IR filter! I did not pay attention to review images first but had to realize the problem when camera placed in my room mostly lit by Halogen bulbs. There was no other color but purple. Now, browsing reviews I see that purple hue is almost everywhere, though to different degree.
6: This point is either, the deal breaker or nothing at all: both, camera and the app are phoning motherland. Camera even has "DDNS service by manufacturer"! I had location disabled and app just refused to continue (actually quitting) declaring that location is "NEEDED" for WiFi setup. B. S.! I had to spoof location to complete WiFi setup. Apps promptly deleted after setup is complete. Once on the network - you can do all settings through browser.
7: My cameras are on section of my net with no internet access. As many ONVIF devices it has NTP client to set time. Because of no Internet I had to disable NTP client, but then I'm still not able to find manual way to set time. Does not really matter as OSD is disabled and NVR will stamp recordings. Still - why?!?
8: HOT! Magnetic mount helps to suck a bit of heat out, but mounted any other way it gets hot.
9: only 8FPS at 1080. OK for most applications, but still. I was trying to pull JPEG stream at the same time as ONVIF - usually camera not able to keep up and looses connection for a few seconds, always recovers on its own but few seconds lost.
10: Yep, it is rhymes with "idiot". Great marketing idea. Or maybe childish revenge?
Magnetic ball mount is cute though! For real. I think.
Knowing all these quirks and limitations, I guess it is still can be used for some project or special occasion. I'm keeping it but I'm not buying another one. There are better cameras for only slightly more.
Update: none of my 3 NVRs able to play the stream. One is occasionally flashes the image with distorted blocks, still unusable. Two other just black screen though indicated that stream is recorded. VLC playing stream no problem and shows it as H.264 without any issues. Still, no use as ONVIF as no NVR displays the image.
The killer: it appeared that camera overheats and processor thermally throttled. With magnetic mount attached it runs one stream at medium bit rate without interrupts. Without mount (no heat sinking) or higher bit rate or more than one stream it goes to lala regularly and unresponsive for a few seconds to a minutes at the time. I think it looks like CPU thermally throttled. Anyway, at this time I know this camera is unreliable and unusable for (my) intended purpose.
