5.0 out of 5 starsMy first 5 star review...
December 21, 2018
I have to admit my bias, I was a pro skater for 12 years. This is the movie I always wanted to make, but the bastard made it better. Compare to the way "Kids" (Larry Clark) opened the eyes to viewers (though his was a much darker outlook). Not to see someone else's crazy life, but to see yourself. Like all independent films it may not speak directly to you, but you can't deny hearing it.

-Onto the mechanics.
Shot for a classic 90's independent aspect ratio, in Filming techniques, Cameras & probably even the Film itself. The writing is uncompromising. Told with utter and incredibly awkward coming-of-age moments. Jonah did not try to make it easier to palate and with that, the beautiful moments glisten. Biggest plus, even though a lot of the characters are explained, in one way or another, none of them truly fit into one mold or another.
On the Skater POV...
The most beautiful thing about skaters is... We're all lost boys. Like Peter Pan, we all wan't to live to the fullest and never grow old (our sense of invincibility). Skating is our way of living and by that, any skater will tell you, "I'm alive.". Most of all, it's our identifier and with that sense of belonging, we own the world. It's a great feeling, but it's your friends that make you feel empowered and that keep you in check.

Side Note,
Souls of Mischief "93' til' infinity" Any 90's hip-hop head's anthem. Along with...
Heiroglyphics "You Never Knew"
Beatnuts "Watch out Now"

BASICALLY, great movie.
Okay, I'm done now.

1.0 out of 5 starsBoring movie about nothing
December 23, 2018
This movie was a lot about nothing. It’s certainly not a comedy. There was not much of a plot. Maybe if you are into skateboarding, you will appreciate this movie. If you don’t have any interest in skateboarding, avoid like the plague.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat Movie

Made me think about when I started skating. It's funny cause I didn't really start skating until 2000. A lot of the same things were still going on though. Na-kel's story about his brother dying and his friend dragging him to skate made me tear up a little lol. I have a similar story my Junior year of high school my mom died. The day I found out, all my friends that lived by me came over and asked me what I wanted to do. All I could say was "Can we go skate?" then they all took me to skating. Skateboarding and music were my go to therapies.

Na-kel also reminded me of the person that got me to skate. My home town pro skater, who was on City Stars at the time with Kareem Campbell. My friend Devine Calloway. There were only two black skaters I knew about at the time. My friend Todd Vincent who also inspired me to skate and Devine Calloway. As a black guy myself I grew up with a lot of criticism. People always telling me why I was doing a white sport. Black people shouldn't be skating. Call me oreo and all kinds of things. Devine and Todd kept me skating. Of course my own will and thoughts like "damn that I am going to do what I want." Which led me to creating my own brand called Open Mind Group lol.

With out those obstacles as a kid and my good friends. I would have never created the brand I have today. So this movie gets an A+ from me. It nailed everything from story telling, skate life, filming like the 90's, and great actors. I applaud Jonah Hill for making such a great independent film. Can't wait until he makes more. 5.0 out of 5 starsStruggle of Growing Up
December 25, 2018
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
I really enjoyed this. It showed the struggle of growing up and the consequences of bad decisions. I also enjoyed how nothing was censored. It was a good depiction. Boys cuss, talk about sex, drink and do drugs. How can you watch this and not connect with Stevie? Just a young boy wanting to fit in and be cool. If you ever felt lost as a kid and had that one thing that felt right, you can relate to how skating made them feel.

5.0 out of 5 starslike looking in a mirror
December 22, 2018

Im 28 years old. I had these exact friends and experiences in middle and high school. Although this was LA, and I'm from Long Island NY, it was like looking in a mirror. The acting, the over the top language, the awkwardness...its spot on. Honestly one of the best movies I've seen a while. Even though its not a particularly hard hitting or "deep" plot, I don't think I've ever felt so emotionally connected to a movie. If you grew up in 90s or early 2000s skate culture, this movie is it.

5.0 out of 5 starsFlawed characters but a friendship that people can only dream of
December 27, 2018
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
I will say that this is one of those movies that is about nothing. That being said, if you look deeper into each character and the overall dynamic between all of these boys, it makes for one of the best movies that I have ever watched. Definitely worth watching for the message, don't go in wanting to like it for the story.

My hubs and I have a 40% chance of both being into the same movie. This one we both said was our favorite that we had both agreed on in a long time. It has the Sandlot vibes with a completely different dynamic but same nostalgia feel for us 90s kids. I think Jonah Hill will continue to make movies like these - at least I hope so!

1.0 out of 5 starsI was always around skaters
April 24, 2019

I skated a little myself and my brother and friends were skaters, despite that, this movie is horrible - vulgarity and full of stealing, lying, disrespect, just wrong. Sure some of it may be true, but it's so much of the evil in this world and rather than look at it as tragic and sad, it's being celebrated. Horrible that this is what people say is great film making... God help us.

1.0 out of 5 starsCreepy, slow, nothing really happens

Main character is like 10 or 11, Johan chose to write a sex scene, disgusting, creepy, disturbing, Johan Hill is officially a pedo-creep for writing and filming this. Movie sucked, no arc, slow, if you want to see a film about feral kids and skating culture watch the movie Kids.... that movie actually has a message about safe sex.
