Hard-core book lovers won't be disappointed.

Adaptations can be hit or miss. So I'm delighted to say this is a home run. Good Omens the TV show has kept incredibly true to the book, and the, frankly fantastic, acting of Michael Sheen and David Tennant keep the viewer wonderfully entertained. The story of Armageddon has never been so much rollicking good fun. John Hamm, best known for Mad Men, plays socially handicapped Gabriel, and Jack Whitehall embodies Newton Pulsifer as though it was written for him.

Readers will admire the way the writing remains true to our beloved favorite, and first time viewers will enjoy the romp through the End of Days.

A Very Intelligent Adaptation

Neil Gaiman and the Good Omens cast, crew, and production team have accomplished something never yet fully managed with a Terry Pratchett-related creation: IMO it is "as" good as the original, and if it's a bit weaker in some ways (I think that the Witchfinder Sergeant/Madame Tracy/Newt Pulsifer/Anathema strand was weaker than I'd have preferred--it might have been worth one more episode in the series to flesh those four out a bit more), it was actually stronger in others. Some things were lost in the trimming that I considered well-edited-out. Further, Crowley and Aziraphale were enriched, with both added material and the exquisite acting of Tennant and Sheen. Gaiman also chose to commit further to the *affection* between angel and demon. Some will interpret it as a romance. I found myself seeing it as Gaiman expressing his love for Pratchett, and the depth of their own friendship over the years. However you choose to spin it, it's more clearly tender, and fierce, and one comes away with a stronger sense of people choosing sides--not heaven or hell, but decency and love.

I know I will want to watch this again--the material will stand multiple viewings, and will continue to offer plenty to think about during and after watching.

BEWARE OF PRE-ORDERING IF ONLY BUYING FOR EXTRAS

Good Omens is Excellent. Other reviews can attest to that, but as the product hasn’t been released I wanted to shared that Neil Gaiman has confirmed (as of August 3, 2019) that neither he nor Douglas (the director) have been contacted about content for extras for the dvd/Blu-ray such as deleted scenes or commentary. That’s not to say there won’t be any, but if that’s why you want this in physical form, maybe wait for the actual reviews.

REVIEW UPDATE AUGUST 11, 2019: Neil Gaiman confirmed on Twitter they’re adding a few extras and “maybe even a deleted scene or two,” so that’s excellent news. I’m still waiting to see reviews of the actual content, but I wanted to update with the new info.

Also, to address dear Benedict being given top billing on Amazon, Neil suggested it’s probably just an alphabetical thing (though why he’s even among the top 3 is beyond any comprehension). Michael Sheen and David Tennant absolutely lead this wonderful ensemble cast.

The extras are a bit underwhelming

I absolutely LOVE this show and have become an avid Michael Sheen fan as a result. I haven't binge-watched a show like this in at least a decade. Every time I watch, I see something different. The social media fandom is extremely good at pointing out details I missed.

I have Amazon Prime, so I only bought the DVD for the extras, which I must say are a bit disappointing. "The Characters of Good Omens" is mostly a poorly timed slide show with photos. There's no in-depth analysis, though they do show a brief sequence of how they exploded the Bentley. There's a nice little piece on the book shop. I'm still heartbroken that they really burned the set, including the books and antique furniture. (That detail is in the TV Companion guide.) They include the scene where it's raining fish, but it's just a close up of the cops near the burning M25 and small fish hitting their windshield, and the male cop trying to convince HQ that it was really, literally, raining fish. I was hoping for The Other Four Riders of the Apocalypse, but they're not in it. Those scenes were never filmed. They do include the scene where Crowley brings down every London-area mobile phone network.
But really, if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the show as many times as you want--and believe me, I've watched it dozens of times! And the TV companion book has way more behind-the-scenes information than the DVD has.

That said, I know they added most of this stuff in a huge hurry at the last minute because they didn't anticipate how hot this show would be or how eager the fandom would be to know about the making of Good Omens.

A faithful adaptation

With heavy involvement by co-author Neil Gaiman, the beloved modern fantasy novel Good Omens has been brought to the screen in a miniseries format.

The novel follows several groups of characters, as does the series, but the latter focuses and expands on the parts of the story involving the novel's most popular characters - the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley.

Neither are particularly good at their jobs. Aziraphale isn't always particularly holy, having some minor vices and not very enthusiastic about smiting anyone, while Crowley has been spending millennia going to great lengths avoiding seriously hurting anyone - especially the innocent - doing the bare minimum to avoid being recalled to hell himself. When the time comes for the Apocolypse to finally occur and the Antichrist is born, they're both horrified and team up to try to save the world they've come to love.

Good Omens was never going to work on screen without a strong Aziraphale and Crowley, and Michael Sheen and David Tennant both nail the characters and their complicated relationship with eachother. However you interpret their bond, it's deeper than anything humans could understand, being the only beings who have existed on earth for it's entire history - and the actors completely sell it. Through angst, humor, tension and affection they're a joy to watch playing off eachother.

The miniseries takes the story slightly further than the book did and leaves an opening for a sequel, which I have mixed feelings about - having anything more happen to the characters would seem a bit cruel, really, after everything they went through - but all in all I can't imagine a better visual interpretation of the story for longtime fans.

LIght hearted drama and English humor... good cast... good dialogue as a friend ship develops between an Angel and a Demon who both have problems with their higher ups and decide to join forces in an odd alliance because they both like being on Earth and don't want to see the Apocalypse destroy their happy life.... historical vinnettes give the storyline some depth: Eden, the French Revolution, Shakespeare, WW2 and the Nazi's, book shops, French pastries and fine Wine, classic sports cars, diabolical Nuns incompetently swapping babies, this show was so hated by some that they killed any chance of a sequel... too bad, they had a good thing going....

I've been aware of 'Good Omens' for years, and was delighted to discover one of my favorites in disc form--so delighted, in fact, that I purchased additional copies for friend and family gifts. Unfortunately, I didn't pay enough attention to what I was buying. This disc is NOT one continuous movie, but rather a series of televised episodes, so you end up seeing the introductory material over and over and over again.

Not a really big deal--fun to watch, in any case. However, I would have looked otherwhere to try to find a complete movie.

This little series stole my heart. The actors and producers put so much love into it. The book is nicely replicated on screen, with extras and small changes that feel true to the original work. Only reason I put 4 stars is that my package came open on the top, just enough of a rip to pull the DVD out. Not sure why that would've been done, never had that issue with Amazon before. But the DVD was still plastic-wrapped and undamaged, so it's alright.

Fantastic show-Wish there were more bonus features

Firstly, I LOVE this mini-series, it's fantastic. I watched ti several time on Prime, so I had to get the Blu Ray. My one and only complaint is I wish there were more bonus features, there are deleted scenes but I wish there were more. Plus I would have loved a blooper segment!

The series is excellent but I really wish it came with more than just one coffee. I would’ve liked to had digital code or DVDs along with the Blu-ray . I watched a couple times already. I’m looking forward to watching the six hours of additional content. Almost as long as the mini series itself . I liked the book and there’s some things in the mini series that aren’t as good as the book but that’s always the case. Overall I think it was well done .
