I loved this book! It was a fast read with tons of tips, insight and information. Dr. Akkerman’s advice is frank and honest and delivered in an friendly, conversational tone that makes the information easy to grasp. He breaks down every aspect of how to make it as a successful Piano Bar Entertainer and dispels a lot of myths. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a career on board a ship in any entertainment position not just as a Piano Bar Entertainer. As a singer/Entertainer on land, I found his words of wisdom and Pro tips really helpful and immediately started applying them to my own shows. Dr. Akkerman created the perfect ‘How to’ manual. Read it and save yourself lots of leg work and heart break.
I found this book to be an easy read full of helpful details. It definitely comes across as an honest insider's look at the profession, and how to get started. The song lists and arranging suggestions are really great too!
Although this book is specifically aimed at piano bar entertainers, I think there is a lot of information that any kind of performer interested in getting into cruise work would find beneficial. From the ins and outs of getting hired to the details of ship life, this book covers a lot of ground!

Wow, just an incredibly insightful read. Started applying Gregg Akkerman’s advice right away to my own performance, and it will change your perspective and work for you as well. Being a piano bar man myself, as one coming up in the ranks this book became available at a time I needed the guidance and help the most. Now I have more fresh songlist ideas and tips to keep it real. HIGHLY recommended!
This book is all about the preparation, execution, and proactive mindset that any gigging musician needs. Even if you are not thinking about getting a gig on a ship, if you are a performer – and especially if you are a soloist (piano, guitar, piano/vocal, or guitar/vocal) this thought-provoking book will a great checklist on how a gigging musician gets the gig, keeps the gig, and plans for life after the gig.
Greg is almost as talented as an author as he is a musician. This book really sheds insight on some inner-workings of the cruise industry and provides a lot of useful content for aspiring piano bar entertainers.
The author knows his stuff. I would consider this the definative book on what it takes to be a Piano Bar Entertainer. The book gives you all you will need to know to get started in this business and also how to go about learning the skills you need. As someone who is always looking to improve his skill this book and its wealth of information challenges me to expand my repitoire! Good read!
