I’ve been a huge fan of the Medicine and Magic series from the first book, and HEMORRHAGE does a great job of continuing the series. HEMORRHAGE is the fourth book in the series, and that gives it the advantage of having a strong world and a vibrant cast of characters to call upon and create a great story, without bogging the story down with world building.
In HEMORRHAGE, Kate makes leaps and bounds with her internal conflict. Throughout Medicine and Magic she’s been getting more and more comfortable with her involvement in the world of magic, but in HEMORRHAGE she finally steps into that role and accepts it even if she doesn’t quite embrace it yet.
The growing magic system and world building behind the magic is what made HEMORRHAGE a 5 bat book for me. I haven’t hated the magic system in Medicine and Magic, but I wasn’t much of a fan. In the first three books it’s little better than handwavium, but in HEMORRHAGE the magic system really comes to life and starts to fall into place with rules and limitations that I felt were missing before. I’m now definitely a fan of the magic system, but I hope to see it improving more and more with future books.
There was more resolution in HEMORRHAGE than the rest of the series, but I hope ANAPHYLAXIS starts to really answer some of the long running mysteries in the Medicine and Magic series. I’m really looking forward to reading ANAPHYLAXIS next month!
