Brilliant concept! Mediocre realization. A good family film, but perhaps limited to Mormons

Maybe my expectations were too high. It's definitely a fine movie and your family will likely enjoy it, so I recommend it with a little hesitation, although I don't think it was good enough to promote outside of Mormon circles (I don't recall there being any doctrinal content, but I think it would require a Mormon's familiarity with the trek concept to appreciate it.) I'm not sure what it was - the pacing was a little off, some scenes, especially the earlier ones, felt like only one step better than a home movie and I felt the script and characters were weak. Some the gags fell flat and the drama just wasn't that dramatic. It's not a bad movie, but the concept of a Trek movie was so brilliant, it left me wanting a lot more from the delivery.
My favorite "Mormonwood" movies are: Suits on the Loose, Once I Was a Beehive, and Mobsters and Mormons. Honorable mentions to Baptists at our Barbecue, Single's Ward and Charly.
