Shrink Significantly, Inferior to Alternatives
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019
I wanted to like these socks, I really did. Being a wool sock connoisseur, I bought these to give them a try. I own many different brands, including Farm to Feet, IceBreakers, Point 6, and others. The Rockay's have some serious flaws and there are much better options on the market.
- First, the Rockay's shrink significantly. Have never had that issue with a wool sock. When washing on gentle cycle, cold water, and fluff air or low air dryer, there should not be shrinkage. To give you an idea, I bought large socks and wear a size 9.5 men’s. After washing, the socks no longer fit!
- Second, the percentage of Merino wool is very low for this price point. Merino should be 50-60% of total fibers, yet these socks only contain 30% wool.
- Third, it is a big red flag that Rockay will only list 'made in Europe' and will not give the socks actual origin. Clearly the socks were not made in one of the top manufacturing destinations for quality (Germany, Italy, France, UK). If they were, they would have listed the specific country of origin.
You may ask what the alternatives are. The best alternative I have found for this cut of sock (often referred to as 'micro' size) is Icebreakers. Check out the Icebreakers socks, “micro size, light”, on their website. You won't be disappointed. I am returning all of the Rockays and buying more Icebreakers. Icebreakers are made in Italy with quality wool from New Zealand. Icebreaker also lists details about all of the growers they use.
