Amazon.com: Customer reviews: COWIN E7 PRO [2018 Upgraded] Active Noise Cancelling Headphone Bluetooth Headphones with Microphone Hi-Fi Deep Bass Wireless Headphones Over Ear 30H Playtime for Travel Work TV Computer Phone - Red
I wanted some over ear headphones to use on my train commutes to and from work, and thought that these looked excellent for the price point I was looking at. After owning them for a few weeks, I'm finally able to leave a good review. On the pro side these are really comfortable, albeit a little bulky, and come with a nice carrying case. That carrying case alone is a bonus for me, since I put them in my shoulder bag that I commute with. The sound profile on these is also pretty darn good, which I was impressed by. My biggest complaint is that the bluetooth "noise cancelling" mode cuts in and out quite frequently when the headphones are jostled. For instance, when you turn your head too quickly or walk up a set of stairs. I've taken to leaving these on their normal bluetooth mode, and just turning up the volume a bit, but I'd like to see that improved.
I saw pretty good reviews for these when I was looking on amazon for good sounding, bluetooth, noise canceling headphones. And that’s what I got. But there are things I cannot ignore.
Pros: Good sound quality with noise cancelation on Battery life is insanely good They are more comfortable than I was expecting. Comes with case, charging cord, aux cord Connection range
Cons: Pushing the down button, goes to the next song and turns the volume up. Why? Noise cancelation isn’t good when walking or very minor movements occur Microphone is terrible Sound quality is terrible when used for calls If you accidentally push too hard to turn noise cancelation off, you turn the whole thing off Ports aren’t covered from dust/particulates
I tried these for a few days before returning them to Amazon. The sound quality is very good, and the earpieces were very comfortable over my glasses. However there were a number of problems:
- The max volume is far too low for my tastes. Compared with other headphones I’ve used, it’s maybe half as loud.
- The buttons on the right earpiece are upside down and the functionality is wonky. Specifically, you press UP for lower volume/previous track and DOWN for higher volume/next track. Also the short press changes tracks while a long press changes volume. All of this is the opposite of what it should logically be.
- I tried using them with the included AUX cable. I was not able to do so without first turning on the headphones. This is not a helpful feature; I like Bluetooth functionality and the only time I would need to use the AUX cable is when the battery is dead - but this isn’t possible.
- Finally, the swivel to move the earpieces is very loose - not necessarily a matter of poor construction, but it just doesn’t feel right.
UPDATE: After returning these I was contacted by Cowin customer service. They sent me a new pair of E8’s as a gesture of good will, because I had several issues with the ones I ended up returning. (The E8’s are definitely superior to the E7, so make sure you check out the latest model.) They did not pressure me to delete this review, but I did tell them I would add this because of their efforts. I’ve also decided to add back another star for excellent service. So if you are on the fence with ordering from Cowin, don’t stress about it - give them a try, knowing that they will definitely bend over backwards to help you solve any problems you might have. And I strongly suggest E8’s instead of this model.
This is my first time writing a review for an item I purchased through Amazon so I feel strongly about what I’m saying here and feel I needed to write something about this product. The E7 pro was a waste of money from my prospective, I purchased this item back in June (2018) and it completely stopped working for me (Now November 2018). The E7 pro fit comfortably and sounded surprisingly good for a $90 dollar pair of earphones, I thought I found a diamond in the rough without having to pay $200 dollars plus for a good set of earphones that would last. I was wrong. None of my other ratings matters (as far as: the material, sound and battery life) because they stopped working. I really liked this item for the price but now I’m out $90 dollars because I didn’t think I had to buy insurance for this. Maybe other buyers of the Cowin E7 Pro had no problems but I did. Beware!!!!!! Update: Cowin just contacted me today (Nov. 24) via Amazon email and wrote that the would like to resolve my problem. I'll see if they come though and get back to those who have read this review. Update again, Cowin has chosen to give me a code to get another E7 pro again. I’ll give them an excellent score for customer service and response. But until I receive this item and see if it works and lasts, I can’t rate this item properly. However once again, customer service gets two thumbs up. Update: As of June 9 2019 the new pair of Cowin’s E7 Pro that I received are working very well. I have had no problems with this pair so far, they are comfortable, sturdy, battery life is very good and sounds really nice, l really like the bass, not too over powering but not low at all. I’m not going to compare this product to other headphones because I’m no expert, but they really do sound good to me, and the price I paid for them or at least for the original pair I purchased back in June 2018 wasn’t bad either. I’ll upgrade the rating to 3.5 stars. I’ll get back to you in a Year to let you know if they still work.
*** My update is that Cowin customer service is great. They read this review and asked me questions about my experience. They asked if they could send me another pair to try, and if they were better, would I change my rating. I agreed. I wish I could give them a half star for customer service. The headphones are 3 stars due to the microphone issue. They aren't 4 stars, but the customer service is top notch. I'll give Cowin a shot on other headphones/earbuds when the time arises. They've earned it if they can fix the microphone issues. *** These are good, solid, Bluetooth headphones. The ANC works very well. Battery life is great, and they pair easily. They are a bit heavy and the cups make my ears sweat, but overall they are comfortable. I am giving these three stars instead of four because the microphone is terrible. I was hoping to use these for Skype calls on my laptop, but you sound as if you're in a tunnel. I thought it might be the poor Bluetooth driver for Windows 10, but the sound is exactly the same on my iPhone. The microphone is useless. View these as Bluetooth headphones with ANC. Compare them to others in the price range and make a decision. I listen to music and shows on planes and trains, and they are a good value for that purpose.
I received the headphones yesterday and I started playing with them instantly as I was excited to get them. The definitely came with that recognizable plastic/rubber outgasing smell. The is likely due to some kind of chemical used to stabilize or cure the synthetic rubber or plastic. Wonder if that is safe to breath, doubt it would be allowed to be manufactured that way in the US or other nations with air quality laws. I am on the fence about returning them due to this smell, it seems to bother me. The fit of the ear pieces is good and soft as advertised, also the headband is also soft and allows for extended use without sensitivity of the scalp from pressure. However the earpieces started making my ears hot and sweaty after about 30 minutes of wearing in a room temperature of 70 degrees. This might be due to the design or the materials. These headphones are big in my opinion and take up a lot of space even when the ear pieces swiveled in 90 degrees. When compared to other headphones that have a folding design these Cowin E7 Pro take up twice the space of these types of designs when storing or traveling.
The button for the OFF-BT-NC is small and is difficult to switch while wearing often clicking from NC to OFF in one click instead of stopping at the BT setting. The + and - buttons are opposite function from all my other Bluetooth headphones. To turn up the volume you have to long press the + button and short press advances the songs. My other 3 headphones(all different manufactures) are short pulses to turn up the volume while a long press is a song change. Using these headphones requires a behavior change for me and creates conflict for me when switching between other headphones and these. While wearing the headphones finding the O button ( Pause/Play or Answer/End a call) is difficult and there is no sensory clue that you are on the location. If you are off slightly you hit the + key and advance the song or - button and it starts the song over again. That is why the + and - buttons should be short press for volume not long press to advance or restart songs. This is especially critical when a call is coming in.
Bluetooth pairing is easy and fast. I have paired with amazon tablets, sony tv, Google pixel 2 and Samsung S7.
Overall the sound quality is good in the BT switch setting, bass is not overly aggressive. I have headphones I would place against these in the $20- $60 price range and would say those are as good or better so these Cowin E7 Pro's feel a bit overpriced. You will notice a reduction is sound quality when in the NC mode, kind of like a tinny sound where the mid to low level bass is removed from the song. Line in cable is cheap and is the kind of cable that retains a memory of its last fold. I would recommend going to a cable that is a ribbon without the memory of the last fold. I have not tested these in a noisy environment yet but will torture test them over the next two weeks with travel and off site work.
Overall: A slightly over priced headphone with funky button arrangements and a chemical outgasing smell.
It's not the most suitable headphones for me, but they have great after sale support
[x]Bluetooth ===========> yes, it's [x]Has microphone ======> yes, it's, not useful for phone calls though [x]Good battery life =====> yes [x]Works in wired mode==> yes, it does, BUT it has to be wired on, which is a bummer [x] works while being charged, YESS Cancels noise ========> no it only reduces the noise ! other points of considerations - if you decide to use the headphones wired and charging, you will be discomforted because one cable will be on the right and another on the left - it's not good for hot weather, it makes your ears extremely hot when used for long periods - its sound quality is not bad, I'm not heavy into music, but for spoken words in videos it's good, - in bluetooth mode only it is good - it's not tight around the head, which is nice if you use it for long time, but makes it easy to slip of your head
update May 15th 2019
the power on-off switch failed on me last month as well as the play/pause button 2 days before. I don't use that that often, and was amazed when I found it broken!
Okay, i got my headphones earlier today. I'm a Transcriptionist and work from home so i was in desparate need of noise cancelling headphones. I wanted the Bose but didn't want to pay that so i found these. They arrived in a beautiful sturdy case that zippers. I unzippered it and was immediately smacked in the face with the intense smell of spray paint. I went to do my work, which i spent exactly 8 hours doing. Let me just say, these headphones will make a deaf person hear. They are way too loud. I put them on the table and walked down the hall and could hear them perfectly. There's no volume control either. I had it set to 18% volume on the laptop and it was still loud as hell. But i sure as shit cant hear anything else!!!! So the noise cancellating feature is 100% effective. Also, theyre so uncomfortable :( during the entire 8 hours my ears hurt so bad (not my hearing, my physical ear) that I had to keep pulling them off nd adjusting them. Ive been done working for 2 hours now, and my ears are still on fire. They're a beautiful color......
Going to upgrade this rating since I have been contacted by the manufacturer. They have sent a replacement pair for me to try at no cost- very impressed by their efforts to keep a customer happy. Also amazon was excellent in their return of the broken set. Hopefully these will last longer than the first set- I appreciate their willingness to try.
Headphones worked fine for my frequent travel but sure enough, one day after the 30 day trial, one of the earphones broke off in my hand. Now I'm not sure what to do as i can't return so I'm stuck with worthless headphones 31 days after delivery. Terrible design-small plastic connection under what looks like a solid metal piece- turns out that is just for show. back to the drawing board.
10/23- customer service contacted me and offered to refund my money, replace with the sane headset or replace with an upgrade. I chose the upgrade. while these are still new it does appear that they are working. in 6 months I'll update again because that was the life span of the first set. So a good thing is that even though the product had an issue, the level of customer service didn't and they were pro active working to make the situation right- that's good and I appreciate it. in the end, I need a good set of headphones and it appears so far, that's what has been delivered. I added 2 stars and will be glad to revise this review higher after this headset continues to perform. I bought the upgraded pro version. after the blue tooth failed I read the instruction manual- no troubleshooting guide at all. It does say the charging light goes out after its fully charged and charge time is 4 hours. I've left the headphones on the charger for 2 days and the lights never gone off, so either the 1 page manual is wrong or the battery is defective upon arrival. At this point the only thing pro about this is how well they swindled me- 6 months and they are non functional garbage going in the trash can and I will never buy any cowin chinese made products again. total rip off.
