5.0 out of 5 starsThink you need a new computer because yours is slow?
May 31, 2018
It used to be that adding RAM was the easiest and cheapest way to speed up a slow computer. That never addressed the real bottleneck of a computer, which is the hard drive. I had a customer complaining that they probably needed a new computer even though theirs was only a little over a year old. Knowing that they had a standard platter-style hard drive, I suggested this. Boy is she glad that I did! Saved her hundreds of dollars on a new computer and likely thousands on lost time waiting for her computer to 'compute' as her entire business relies on her computer to make her money.

1.0 out of 5 starsWarning! Defective Items are being shipped with July 2018 releases
August 23, 2018
I ordered a hard disk and tested through the Crystal Disk benchmark. It was only giving 50% less speeds than specifications. I have a 5 yr old Samsung SSD with same operating system which was reading above 500MB/S for the sequential test. I have run the same test with another Samsung SSD 850 EVO, which also gave above 500MB/s. I made sure that all the parameters are same for different SSDs.
I got a replacement disk from amazon and it turned to be defective as well. I tried one from Best Buy released in the same month and discovered the same. Samsung's Quality testing has gone downhill and they should be ashamed of themselves for selling so many defective units.
Before a person from Samsung replies to my comment, they should also note that I have already contacted Samsung and they said the issue can't be fixed and to return the drive.

3.0 out of 5 starsNO R.A.P.I.D. for YOU (AMD users)!
August 8, 2018
Capacity: 4 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
Drive performs well enough. I used it as the sole storage device for a Ryzen 2700x/Crosshair VII Hero Wifi/GTX 1080ti build.

I am very annoyed that Samsung apparently for a number of years dropped support for AMD platforms where R.A.P.I.D. is concerned. The nvme drives simply do not have enough capacity at this point and I am annoyed by Samsung's laziness on this front. I would pay for a 4tb nvme drive and skip the BS ram drive but I can't (doesn't exist) and since the best thing running right now is the AMD architecture it is regrettable that Samsung has no plans to change the state of things where this is concerned. Gives me a feeling similar to what intel generated from the death of LGA 775 forward in me. That feeling is one of if ever a viable competitor comes along, I will jump the Samsung ship hastily... unless they fix their software and give me options afforded computers powered by Intel

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat Drive No Usable Software No Download At Times Plus Speed Test
November 30, 2018
Capacity: 1 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
There are many Pros for replacing your HDD with an SSD and I for one have seen quite an improvement in speed. I run an Alienware M18X with Windows 10 Pro and 32 GB of Ram. The reason I mention this is that although the system still worked fine it has slowed down, replacing the 5400 RPM HDD with a 1TB SSD was a logical step. (since Dell no longer makes a 18.4" laptop)
I researched this drive and it had great ratings around the web, so I was excited to get it, first let me say it will fit where your current 2.5" drive goes no problem. I borrowed a disk cloning machine so I didn't need their software and it's a good thing. After installing the drive I tried to download Samsung Magician and received a not so friendly message that their quota had been met and I could not download the software. What, wait didn;t I buy a SSD with software and your quota has been met. Really so I understand they don't want to include software with every drive but come on you Samsung.
So finally at 2 AM I was able to download the software only to find out it's not really usable (see second photo) how can that be I received the download address with the drive, you are Samsung are you not.I used software to check the speed of the drive and it's not bad, however what I'm missing is the tools that were promised to make the drive faster.
I feel kind of cheated since I did everything right and Samsung sold me a product that was less than advertised. Don't get me wrong I'm still happy I replaced my HDD and would do it again however Samsung (which I own many of their products) should either support their product or change the product description.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat Drive, Horrible support
August 7, 2018
Capacity: 500GBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
I purchased this drive to replace a smaller Samsung 840 SSD. I had trouble getting the drive to be recognized by my system. I called support and waited on hold for 20 minute and then was transferred to a survey on how my support was. I never talked to anyone. I received assistance from Startech (the maker of the USB-Sata cable) and got the drive recognized. The next issue was with the Samsung cloning software. I called tech support again and this time their automated phone system transferred me to Seagate support! I thought Samsung may have a contract with them for support, but wasted 20 minuted with absolutely the most clueless support person I have ever dealt with. Call number 3 and I spoke with someone at Samsung. He was very curt saying I must have a bad sector on my old drive (I didn't - I had checked it carefully) and that I would have to do a clean install. I asked for any other options and he said no. Luckily I didn't give up and did my research on the web, and was able to clone my drive over to the new drive. The new drive works great.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot compatible with AMD’s SATA controller but still works
November 15, 2018
Capacity: 1 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
It’s not compatible with AMD’s SATA controller. The 860 freezes the whole operating system while it’s in use. Samsung does not have a firmware update to fix this problem. I suggest getting WD, Crucial or Sandisk SSD if you are using AMD. To get the drive working, I had to replace the AMD's SATA Controller driver with Microsoft's Generic AHCI Controller driver. But by doing this, the controller floods my Windows event log with device errors. The CRC error count go up in S.M.A.R.T. each time a disk error is logged. I can use the drive normally without any problems, but in the long run I’m not sure what will happen if the CRC count keeps increasing.

3.0 out of 5 starsI'm not sure what I was really expecting.
December 15, 2018
Capacity: 500GBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
I guess you always see it all over YouTube these Blazing fast speeds from this SSD or SSD's in general I'm not 100% impressed, I guess reviewers really over hype these hard drives a bit much, tested with Windows first it was a bit faster but not super fast I was a bit let down to be honest, tested with Linux and I couldn't tell a deference, yes I updated the firmware still not much that made me feel like it was worth the extra money.

side by side in two computers with same A7 AMD motherboards and exact same specs SSD verses Seagate 7200rpm drive:
Windows 10 verse Windows 10, SSD was a bit faster but not by much, nothing I'd be bragging about at least.
Windows 10 SSD verses Arch Linux running Cinnamon w/ the Seagate 7200rpm hard drive, Linux was faster w/
the mechanical drive over the SSD running Windows 10.
Final match up Linux verses Linux both computers set up exactly the same w/ Arch Linux running the Cinnamon
O/S and honestly couldn't tell a difference, I somewhat feel I could have done better simply sticking to the
Mechanical Hard Drive and saved a bunch of money, not to mention gotten more storage space cheaper.

Can't trust these reviewers on YouTube apparently, I hope the SSD is maybe a bit tougher, I really wanted the blazing speeds everyone keeps talking about, but I unless something drastically changes I won't be wasting my hard earned money a second time, next Laptop I build I'll just upgrade to the 7200rpm mechanical hard drive and double my storage space.........................................

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung 500GB 860 EVO SATA III SSD and for your review. Engineered with V-NAND technology to enhance performance in today's mainstream PC's and laptops, this SSD was designed to deliver speeds of up to 550MB/s Seq. Read and 520MB/s Seq. Write.

I am sorry to hear that you are not completely happy with performance speeds. As several factors could affect speed, I would encourage you to call Samsung Customer Support to better diagnose your speed issues.

3.0 out of 5 starsMediocre speeds, high price
December 8, 2018
Capacity: 4 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
Replaced a 2 TB SSD with this 4TB one. So far, performance has been flawless, as should be the case of all SSDs. Speeds are unimpressive -- copying a 43.8 GB set of mostly multi-GB files from and to itself took a whopping 182 seconds, for a speed of 241 MB/s, far below the advertised 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Copying the same file set from it to an internal M2 SSD took 122 seconds, for 359 MB/s (again, well below the advertised 550 MB/s), and coping the same file set from the internal M2 SSD to this unit took a whopping 154 seconds, for a mere 284 MB/s.

Yes, in the second two tests, my M2 SSD's speeds are relevant, but they're faster than the Samsung 860, and so shouldn't be a problem.

In short, mediocre performance, exaggerated price, large size.

3.0 out of 5 starsFaulty link to Magician which doesn't even support this SSD Drive...
February 11, 2019
Capacity: 2 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
I bought the enclosure bundled with the drive via Amazon. The enclosure doesn't close correctly so I returned for a new one. New one was perfect.

The SSD user's manual suggests downloading Magician by Samsung. Unfortunately, Samsung has a few products labeled Magician and the link provided in the users manual doesn't go to a page with Magician on it. A search via Samsung's Website also doesn't show the software and instead links out to various TV apps. So I had the nerds over a Google search the Samsung site for me and got the correct link.

Once Samsung's Magician was up and running it doesn't even support their own Samsung drive! So back to Google to have Windows format the drive using Disk Management. I'm using Windows 10 Pro on a top of the line Dell Laptop.

Windows formatted the drive perfectly. Found zero problems and I did the long format with all the checking of the drive. Took a few hours. But again, zero problems.

So, all in all, not an impressive start for a drive with almost five stars. Will update if I have any quality problems with the Samsung 2TB SSD drive.

3.0 out of 5 starsBest upgrade for older pc.
August 12, 2019
Capacity: 1 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
Got this for an older though high grade pc. Considering new pc but then looked at this SSD to speed up the old cow.

Cloning operation couldn't have been easier but did have to change hardware detection in bios to recognize new drive.

Had a few blue screens of death and lockups the first few days of running and almost sent it back but but did some driver updates and following few weeks have been just fine. Chalking it up to an old pc that needed updates for new hardware.

Ran PC speed tests. Ranged from 3x to 30x faster on various operations. Start up time is 5x faster.

Best upgrade you can make to an older pc. Was ready to send $2000 on new pc but only needed this to $100 SSD to get the speed I wanted.

VINE VOICE
3.0 out of 5 starsWon't work in a RAID 1 configurations using a PERC 710 adapter
October 31, 2019
Capacity: 2 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
I had purchased two of these drives to use in a RAID 1 configuration in my Dell T5600 with a PERC 710 RAID controller. After initializing the drives, I found they would not make a RAID 1 boot drive. Since the 2 TB Samsung drive is a slightly different size than my existing 2 TB WD hard drives, I could not use the rebuild function. So, I tried to make a drive that had a bootable copy of my existing drives in their RAID 1 configuration. Then I figured I would put that drive in the PC, and put the other Samsung drive in and then let the first drive "rebuild" the second drive. But, since it is not possible to create the first bootable copy, that was not possible. I called Samsung and their response was that they do not support RAID.

As back-up drives these solid state drives are perfect - they just won't do what I wanted.

Good value for a 2TB solid state drive.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe drive is Mac OSX compatible, the software is not
August 18, 2019
Capacity: 2 TBStyle: SSDVerified Purchase
This is what is included in the description: "Hardware/Software Compatibility: Windows 8/Windows 7/Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit), Vista (SP1 and above), XP (SP2 and above), MAC OSX, and Linux". After I purchased and installed the drive in my iMac, I learned that Samsung's Magician software is only compatible with Windows. If you own a Mac, be sure you have other software that will allow you to migrate data from your old drive to your new one before purchasing this SSD. (I have Carbon Copy Cloner, and it worked perfectly.)

This SSD is replacing a WD 2TB HDD that went out after just over 3 years of heavy use. After the install, my iMac is much faster than it had been with a failing drive. So far, I'm happy with the SSD's performance. I am NOT happy that Samsung doesn't make ANY software for Mac OSX users.
