Updated: GPT Partitions getting destroyed and not USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gb) compatible (?)
October 15, 2018
I like Sabrent products and initially found this product to work very well. I didn't use the disk cloning option, but found read/write speeds to be excellent (180MB+), including between 2 HDs in the same docking station. However, I initially gave the unit a poor review and returned it because it was trashing/destroying GPT partitions on my 4TB drives. I latter updated the review to correct my statement stating that the problem was system related (and raised the review to 4 stars). I'm now updating the review again, and downgrading the unit back to 1 star, as it really was the unit's problem. After returning this Sabrent device I bought an Inateck dual docking station (FBA_FD2002) and that unit also corrupted GPT partitions. After reverting back to an older USB 3.0 dual docking station and additionally connecting drives via eSATA I had no problems. So, I suspect the ASMedia ASM1156 chip in common with both units is the culprit when used with Windows 10. Also, neither unit with the ASM1156 part works when connected to a USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gb) port on my MSI system with a AMI UEFI BIOS. Bottom line, I'd strongly advise against buying any docking device that has this chip, including the Inateck FD2005-BK-US docking station that is a clone of this Sabrent unit [it would seem OEMed from the same manufacturer, but sold for a $1 less (?)]. What a mess.
