Rome is in the clutches of evil and an embattled Pope strives to save all he can without losing a tenuous grasp on neutrality

The SS is killing and torturing on the instructions of Berlin and exacts terrible vengeance against those who would dare interfere. A fascinating look into the workings of the Vatican, coupled with the upper levels of Italian society and the communist partisans, who held each other at arms length while working together to undermine German authority. This novelized treatment of historic events with great effort to accurately record the Nazi occupation of Rome, persecution of the Jews, and subsequent defeat of the German army lends a fascinating view of these troubled times. Through it all the Pope sought to bring refuge, balance, and sanity, where one existed. Most interesting and well worth the time.
