While many films use the soundtrack as mere background, Ennio Morricone's music stands by itself as imaginative and hauntingly beautiful. This can be said of only a few other composers of film music. Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, and John Barry are a few others that come to mind and have the ability to carry the listener to wondrous heights with their compositions. If the listener wants music of strength and presence then Mr. Morricone is for you.
"The Essential Ennio Morricone" is a grand exhibit of film music at its best and I can heartily recommend this CD as a wonderful buy. It is music that will be played again and again. The recording is excellent are the liner notes. This CD should be standard listening for anyone who has discovered film music as an interesting and enjoyable genre.
