A great upgrade on the "classic" version

This is nice. Genuinely. It's a good product. Much nicer than the plastic version. Buy it without worry. It's not cheap.
The base is a nice solid wood. The vertical part (the part with the circles) feels a bit more like a balsa wood. But it doesn't feel cheap. The edges are very smooth. The lines are clean. But it's obviously more lightweight than the wood of the base. This doesn't detract from the quality in any way - I'm just describing it. The chips are great. Very nice solid wood - with a good paint job.
I'm not a "wooden toys are better than plastic toys" person. I love plastic :D I've got lots of plastic toys. But I've felt that the classic connect 4 game is super duper cheap. You have to punch the plastic out of forms. It's not good quality - and I say that with it having nothing to do with it being classic. It's just cheap junk, and if they made a high quality plastic version of it, I'd have bought that. But they don't, so I looked for alternatives and found this. This version is great. I've been playing this game with my 5 year old. With this game on the market, there's not excuse to buy the cheap plastic version.
I'm not posting a picture at the moment, but it looks just as good - if not better - than the product picture. It's on the smaller size (the main playing area is probably around 8" x 10"), but it's not at all too small. This is the sort of game where being larger doesn't make it better in any way.
I feel like this would be a great unexpected and well-appreciated birthday gift for kids. I might stock up on these as the on-hand gift for the next 6th birthday party we're invited to .. (though it could be gifted to adults as well)
