I could not put it down. Keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. I am a librarian and wish it was in every library. Although it is a novel it teaches so much about life in the middle east. I hope the author writes more. I will read everything she publishes.
I enjoyed reading the book because it was told from the heart and gave good insight into some tragic experiences by women seeking menial employment abroad. The English was hard to understand at times but it was brave for the author to tell the story of her life so openly. I pray that this form of trafficking can be stopped and that her story can bring more attention to this crisis.
Excellent story! The plight of women around the world is horrible! It is tough to earn enough money to take care of a family, work full time and have to deal with an abusive husband.
I have read in other places about the terrible, sadistic behavior towards the work staff in Saudi Arabia and the Islamic world. So I believe all that is written in this book, but the torture this poor lady went through us totally horrific and barbaric.
I agree with all the other reviews about how the book was written; there were quite a few errors with paragraphing, punctuation and wrong word usage. I tended to ignore the errors thinking that this story was written by a non-native English speaker. The story of this courageous lady over-shadowed the occasional English mistakes for me.
This was a very interesting and well-written story with excellent pacing throughout. The people were all fairly represented. The reason it did not rate five stars was poor editing, maybe by a person who speaks English as a second language? The errors seemed to be verb tense for the most part. If you can overlook the jarring of some grammatical mistakes, this is a good story.
This was a very interesting book to read. I know that there were spelling and grammar errors, but I just chalk that up to cultural differences. The focus of the reader is to gain an understanding of atrocities that exist in the world today. I am happy that people are paying attention to the humane treatment of each other and this book brings that information to our attention.
I was drawn in immediately to Kamala's plight, and the grammatic difficulties were no problem for me. Instead I focused on the heart and soul of the meaning behind the words, and it was both heartining and devastating. To read of such atrocities made me think carefully about the cultures in the world that we consider to be 'allies'. Kamala, your bravery is very ethereal.
