Such Great Characters!
Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2016
This is the first Mark Hazard book I've read and I'm already onto the next book in the series. The characters stick with you and you want to know what happens to them after the events depicted in this novel conclude. Kyle Villante and Solomon Aduwo feel like real and very different people, but aside from some 'loose cannon' stereotypes with Villante, they're very believable. They get on one another's nerves, but it's not over the top or beaten to death. The murder itself is nothing spectacular except for the fact that it takes place in a moderately sized, rust-belt town, which reads truer than some dramatic or especially gruesome 'big-city, everyone's jaded' sort of story. That allows the characters, even the minor ones, to not have to be high-contrast caricatures or hacky 'types'. Additionally, the dialogue is acurate and true-to-life, which goes a long way toward making the people feel real even though the actual city is, indeed, 'Nowhere, USA'.
