(Note: Dog DNA and DNA Affirm appear to be the same item sold as DNA My Dog, based on my ordering experience). I decided to DNA test my dog, but also to try three different testing services simultaneously to compare the results. I used what looked like the most popular services: Mars Veterinary Wisdom Panel, Embark, and DNA My Dog. Long-story-short, Mars returned the results surprisingly quickly, while DNA My Dog took ridiculously long to get the results (ironic, since the speed of results is one of its marketing points), but hands down Embark took by far the longest to return results. The services were not wholly consistent in their results. They all provided the same primary breed ancestry, but did not agree on the secondary breeds. Both Mars and Embark provided the same breed results. DNA My Dog appeared to provide results more closely aligned with the picture of the dog I uploaded, but different from the other two. Subsequently, I tested another dog with both Mars and DNA My Dog. I did not upload a picture. Mars returned correct results based on what was known about the dog. DNA My Dog provided ridiculously wrong results (large breed results for a 19 pound dog). Embark is superior to Mars in the amount and depth of analysis provided, especially the health analysis. All in all, I’m inclined to favor Mars for faster, lower cost results delivery. However, if time and price are not an issue, then Embark provides the most comprehensive, informative, and interesting results. I do not recommend DNA My Dog.
This is a complete scam, avoid this company at all costs and I would have marked the product 0 stars if that was possible. When we first received the DNA kit, I immediately noticed that you have to include a picture of the dog in order for it to be completed or they would not process the DNA test. They claim that they have this in order to place a picture on the DNA certificate but in reality, its just so they can look at your dog and see what it looks like opposed to performing any actual DNA tests. We purchased two kits, one for our Chow Chow which I included an actual picture of her and the other for a miniature poodle mix, which I included a picture of a wild boar head that I shot last year. The second picture is clearly a boar head that has been stuffed and mounted. As suspected, the DNA test came back that the poodle mix was a combination of a Labrador retriever as well as a Chesapeake Bay Retriever..... The poodle mix is 6 pounds total weight and all these people do is look at the picture of your dog where no DNA test is performed. I cant believe they would even process this as they did, as the picture is obviously not a dog.......AVOID THIS COMPANY/PRODUCT Here are the pictures which speak for themselves.
I did this test on my dog who looks like a golden retriever. I adopted him and his mom is all black and his litter is all mixed colors. When I registered the product they required a picture which I though was suspicious. The test came back he is 100% golden retriever. I think they just looked at his picture and never tested the DNA. I have called a few times and emailed but haven't gotten a response. Waste of money.
The directions are very clear, the process of swabbing my dogs mouth was easy, and having a self addressed envelope was a nice touch. However, there seems a problem with getting results. It's been over six weeks and I still have not recieved any results even after reaching out to the company. Based on my experience I would not would suggest this product to anyone.
I feel like this test has a very low percentage of accuracy. I'm not sure why. My dog's results seemed very off. I did a Wisdom Panel 4.0 and didn't send in a photo. Got the results back and they seemed much more believable. I repeated the Wisdom test with different address and email and got the same results as the first wisdom test. I think this company attempts to figure out what beeed your dog is by the photo submitted. . Also their database of breeds tested for is very small. My dog was a combination of 3 breeds this company tested for though and results did not come back as matching for 2 of the breeds. They matched her to 2 other breeds that I don't believe are accurate. I wouldn't waste my money on this test again.
After having waited over 3 months for the results, I bought an Embark DNA test. Then of course I finally got the results for this test which showed she was half Carolina dog, and the other half a mixture of German Shepherd and 3 other breeds. Everyone was amazed since she sure looks like a German Shepherd but I believed it since DNA doesn't lie. Then the results from Embark come back, which show she is 95.8% German Shepherd and 4.2% Australian Shepherd. Huge price difference but the Embark gives more detailed results by individual chromosome and tests for health, inbreeding, etc. I guess the only way to know for sure is to go through a third company, but I'm going with the Embark results that more closely match her appearance and behavior.
As others have mentioned, I can't even tell you if this is a good product as its been over a month and I've got no results. The card included in the kit specifically says "Due to high volume of thest (their typo not mine), staff do not offer status updates regarding specific cases via email or phone." Well, that's convenient isn't it. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT IS A SCAM.
