Expect the unexpected
July 1, 2016
If I wrote this review a week ago, I'd probably give one star. Long story short, we adopted a Golden / German Shepherd mix, or so we were told. He looks the part, so we went with it. But, since he is a rescue, there was really no way to know for sure. After much debate, we decided to finally give this test a shot to find out for real.
The test is super easy, just 2 quick swabs. You can track the status of the test online and ours came back way quicker than expected. We were so excited to see what the results would be, but were surprised and otherwise disappointed by what we found. The layout of the results is awesome- family tree, percentages, etc. Incredibly detailed. Our results told us we had a 50% Rottweiler, 25% Husky, and 25% unidentifiable.
That didn't make any sense to us. He doesn't really identify with either breed. And 25% unknown? Really? I quickly filed a dispute, and the customer service responded right away asking for photos of my dog so they can dig in for themselves. After about a week, I received an incredibly thorough, personalized email explaining the situation and breaking down every specific detail about my dog. I was told that the results for my test were very good and there was no issue, and then went on to explain what my dog likely inherited from his parent breeds. Long story short, most dogs carry traits that they don't even display themselves, so the majority of mixed breeds end up looking different than expected.
Overall, a hard pill to swallow, but every case is different. If it wasn't for the customer service and awesome explanation, I would think I got totally ripped off. But, it is all definitely believable. I'm glad we ran the test to get answers, even though it is not what we expected.
