DEFECTIVE?...BAD TONER POWDER? EXPIRED? PRINTER DRUM DAMAGED? Stick with OEM.
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2019
Up to this point I have ONLY used Brother OEM Drums and Toner Cartridges for my Printers. I have been using either the 420 or 450 OEM Toner Cartridges for years. I purchased these E-Z Ink Toner Cartridges to give it a try since the Amazon Reviews were so Positive. $55.00 for one Brother OEM Toner Cartridge...versus $17.00 for two E-Z Ink Cartridges? Sounds like a No-Brainer.. doesn't it? Sure I heard of people having problems with their Printers when they did not use OEM parts but..but...but...the Amazon Reviews are close to Five Stars.. I purchased these Cartridges in July 2018 to use a later date... opened the sealed cartridge on April 5th 2019.
I opened one of these Toner Cartridges...removed the old Cartridge and put this E-Z Ink Cartridge in the Drum. A Thick Vertical Black Line was appearing on all the pages. I took out the Toner Cartridges and did not see anything unusual. I ran a Troubleshoot diagnostic...nothing wrong with the spooler or the printer. I did a Drum Auto Clean and the Black Lines persisted. Hmmmm.. Once again removed the Toner cartridge and noticed an accumulation of Black Toner Powder..at the edge of the Toner cartridge lip. This is not right I thought. Using Q-tips I cleaned it very gently...and now noticed that the Drum also has a vertical line of Black Toner Powder on it..so I cleaned that also. I reinserted the entire assembly and voila! Problem Solved! I printed another 4 or 5 pages and called it a night.
Next morning, start printing...immediately...the Same Freaking Thick Black Vertical Line. So, I repeated the examination and process. I did hear a rattling from the Toner Cartridge but that might be normal. Checked the Drum and auto cleaned it...Toner Cartridge? More black gunk/powder on the lip and kind of underneath the Roller. I can't look inside so I have no idea if something is wrong with it.
Is there something Wrong with the Toner Powder? Is the Toner Powder clumping up? Does the Toner Powder go bad over time even when it is Sealed?
Did the see thru thin Yellow Bag that E-Z Ink use keep the Toner Powder fresh?
The OEM CARTRIDGE BAG is METALLIC, OPAQUE and THICK.
Is there an EXPIRATION DATE on Toner Powder?...Never thought there was..No Expiration Date stated on the Box....Did something in or on the Toner Cartridge end up scraping against the Drum? Check the Drum again...yep.. the same Vertical Black Line of Dust...cleaned it again and hoped for the best.
Long story short... the Black Vertical Line persisted on the next 15 pages. I kept checking and cleaning..but it did not go away this time.
AND NOW... the Printer with the Drum and Toner cartridge when inserted just flashes "TONER". What to do? I don't see the point in replacing the Drum since the problem appears to be "TONER." However, I have to seriously wonder has the Printer Drum been damaged? Has this E-Z Crap cartridge somehow damaged my Printer Drum? Can Bad Toner Powder damage a Printer Drum? Have I damaged the drum from taking it in and out of the printer?
At this point it's about 1 Hour on April 5th...followed by 1 1/2 hours on April 6th..spent trying to figure out why my Printer continued to print with a Large Black Line... and then eventually Flashed "TONER".and stopped printing.
SO, I am calling it quits. I am not an expert in printer technology by any means but I have successfully troubleshooted simple problems in the past.
Well, it looks like I have a choice: at a minimum... buy a New OEM Toner Cartridge... ...possibly followed by a New OEM Drum.. or at this point... will I need an New Printer?
Frankly, it seems like the cheaper and easiest option would to be just be to buy a New Printer. One thing I know that I will do in the future...stick with OEM Cartridges and OEM Toner.
And folks.. don't buy something on Amazon with the expectation of using it in the future. Obviously I can't do a return and that's my fault. One Last thing: Don't trust Amazon Product Reviews!
