Wonderful. Grittier, darker, more compelling than ever. We last saw him in Captain America, the First Avenger, heroically crashing his plane into the sea. Captain America: The Winter Soldier picks up his story about 2 years after he awakens from his 70 year long hibernation. While working closely with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, for STRIKE, Captain America learns about a plot involving three helicarriers that are killing important individuals around the world. Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, makes an appearance in this movie, which is great to see. One of the fun aspects of Marvel is that characters never seem to really die. Evil Doctor Zola makes an appearance as does Bucky, Chris Rogers' best friend from childhood. The best part about Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the relationship between Rogers and Bucky- it's touching to watch them remember their friendship motto through thick and thin, as friends and as enemies. I believe the reason Marvel movies are so successful is that they always champion the Good, the Noble, the Humble and the Servant. It's never easy to achieve any of those traits in these movies, but it is always worth it. The makers of these Marvel movies combine deeply emotional relationships within an exciting plot and add mind blowing special effects to bring pure magic to the screen. I was blown away by this family friendly, awesome movie!

I'm a Captain American fan. I have been since the 70's. It's one of the reasons that I could put up with the first Captain America movie as I know the history of the character in media; if it wasn't for that I would have hated it like so many others due to the "song and dance".
However, I digress. I saw Captain Ameria :: Civil War first. I don't have any history with that storyline in the (comic) books so it couldn't get ruined for me due to current Marvel continuity (Baseball caps as masks to disquise super-heroes aside), so I found that to be a good super-hero movie (not so much Captain America as it is really two teams fighting against each other and really takes little to no time to further develop Steve Rogers or any of the other charcters in the movie) ... oh, I guess I'm off point again ...
... So back to Captain America :: The Winter Soldier. Okay, so since an altercation with Marvel back in the 80's, I haven't read but so much of their books since that time. I missed out on this whole story line which was apparently retcon-ed into the Marvel Universe at some point. That doesn't bother me all but so much. I would like more takes on the original Jack Kirby vision of Captain America (These days a movie goign into the "Nomad" period would have been more politically impacting than Civil War).
Sorry, off point again, so this goes into some of the same ground that Marvel's Agents of Shield did. This should be ground less ventured and saved for 6th or 7th film. Pairing Captain America and the Agents of Shield was always a good mix. This film works to destroy that combination. (Not that I can get behind this new "American" SHIELD - it was international previously. Should have always stayed as international.)
And, though this is a bit confusing, that is why I gave this three stars.

Captain America Winter Soldier was just an amazing film: great action packed thriller. It's undoubtedly one of the best films within the Marvel Universe along with Iron Man, but the amazing thing about Winter Soldier is that even if it wasn't a superhero movie, it will still be a really amazing movie, and one of the best action-spy-thrillers of all time. The amazing thing about Captain America is that all its films besides the Winter Soldier are amazing in their own right; the same cannot be said with all of the other superhero movies within the Marvel Universe. The story was interesting (brings you closer), and though it's called the "Winter Soldier", that character didn't really get much of a screen time. Unlike most of the other films within the Marvel Universe, Winter Soldier is one of those films you would see AGAIN & AGAIN!!! it was entertaining. The movie looked serious too.

I mean it's Cap America. How could you go wrong? I'm a MCU nerd anyway so I don't know if I could write a bad review on this. I love the Winter Soldier, he's one of my fave MCU characters. I love how they flesh out his story and his relationship with Cap in this one. This was one of my fave of the Cap movies. I hope you enjoy it - just be advised, I wouldn't talk about about December 16, 1991.

TOP 500 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 starsThe best of the 3 Captain American movies
May 18, 2019
Format: DVDVerified Purchase
Winter Soldier is the best of the three Captain American movies Marvel released. The first was a war movie. This one was a spy thriller.

The story revolves around SHIELD, the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate, being infiltrated by Hydra after World War II. At the top was Alexander Pierce played by Robert Redford, a senior official of SHIELD and a member of the World Security Council. He’d put his people throughout the organization over the years to carry out Hydra’s plan to eventually wipe out all opposition. That includes trying to kill SHIELD director Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson.

Cap, Chris Evans, and the Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson, begin by trying to find out who tried to take out Fury, which leads them to discover Hydra’s plans. One of Hydra’s agents is the Winter Soldier played by Sebastian Stan. He was Steve Roger’s best friend Bucky Barnes during World War II who he thought was killed, but was actually turned into a Soviet and then Hydra agent. That’s where the title comes from. The movie also introduces Anthony Mackie as the Falcon, Captain America’s longtime partner.

The movie plays out like a spy flick with Redford’s plotting and Evans and Johansson’s shifting through the evidence to find out what he was up to.

Along the way there are all kinds of great parts.

The first fight scene is between Cap and Batroc played by MMA fighter Georges St Pierre. Batroc was always one of Captain America’s more ridiculous foes as he was basically an acrobat turned fighter. The movie gives him a much better portrayal than the original comics.

At the very start Mackie suggests Evans listen to Marvin Gay’s Trouble Man soundtrack from the 1970s blaxploitation film of the same name. That’s actually foreshadowing as Trouble Man is about the main character being chased by both the good and bad guys, which is the situation Evans and Johansson eventually find themselves in.

A woman living next door to Evans turns out to be a SHIELD agent, but not just any agent, but Sharon Carter played by Emily VanCamp. She’s the niece of Peggy Carter, Cap’s lost-World War II love. In the comics Sharon Carter is Steve Roger’s girlfriend. The connection between the two women is hinted at earlier when Evans visits Peggy Carter played by Hayley Atwell.

Arnim Zola also makes a return from the first film. There he was a scientist for the Red Skull. Here his consciousness is retained within a giant computer in SHIELD’s old headquarters. This was a play on the comics which had him living within a biorobotic body.

Another little Easter Egg is Senator Stern played by Garry Shandling gets exposed as a Hydra agent.

Also during the end sequence SHEILD/Hydra agent played by Frank Grillo is seen on a gurney. He would become Crossbones symbolized by he crossed bandoliers on his chest.

Overall, Winter Soldiers give you drama, it gives you suspense, it gives you a great plot, and action on top which is why it’s the best Captain America flick.

This is, by a wide margin, my favorite Marvel Studios movie. It helps that Cap is my favorite Marvel character, but it's also just a fun, exciting, well-executed action/spy movie that masquerades as a superhero movie. Chris whatsisface is pitch perfect as Cap, and the interaction between him and Black Widow is a lot of fun. The fight scenes are some of the best-choreographed I've seen--I love that they're "normal" fights, just sped up to 2x because that's what it should look like when guys with super powers get in a fist fight.

As a lapsed comic book reader, I've been disappointed with the majority of comic movies that have come out in the last ~20 years or so. That said, this one ranks up there with The Dark Knight as one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 starsWe love this movie because it's showing our current REALITY
August 12, 2019
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
For anyone who has been studying conspiracies in the last several decades, this movie pretty much paints a precise picture of EXACTLY what could very well be happening in our current governmental system. A sinister enemy leftover from the Nazi era hiding so perfectly within the very institutions it claims to represent. The Nazi scientists were indeed brought over to America and saved from death or torture in order to share their ahead-of-their-time advancements with the U.S. And from the recruited Nazi's, could it be that they infiltrated to such a degree that a "shadowy government with its own military, its own fundraising mechanism" exists, and will persist as Sen. Dan Inouye once warned, as did Dwight Eisenhower as his final message as President. This movie is brilliant, nobody who is a fan of Captain American and Marvel studios can deny it. But why did this movie hit such a nerve with audiences? Because this is very close to the reality that people are waking up to, slowly but surely, because the wool has been pulled over so many eyes. Subconsciously people know that this is not just made up fiction...deep down they know that truth is often more fascinating than fiction, so where better to draw from than truth to fill the complex plot lines of our beloved movies. I love everything about this film, but its also scary to think of an "evil force" hiding within the government and military that has such power and organization as Hydra is depicted. It even mentions the Hydra new world order, a clear reference to recognized conspiracy theory. So is it a revelation of things to come? We'll see. But wow it seems that major truth is being packaged as entertainment to educate the dumbed-down masses in the way they can warm up to gradually. The Russo brothers amaze me. They make extraordinary films, and as I write this, they have the highest grossing movie ever made (Endgame)....well done, and thank you for making such a brilliant and politically relevant movie. We need a Captain America...heck maybe we already have one, or several of these "white knights" fighting for good. Maybe much of the "fantastic" plot lines, from Cyborgs, to Super Soldiers, to advanced A.I., to Alien empires who have a deep interest and historical connection to Earthlings, all exist... and movies are showing us what our governments already know and have already developed...Yay for Superheroes, because they remind us of our very best qualities!

GET THIS MOVIE. GET THIS MOVIE. I have seen the Terminator series. I was a kid when they first introduced Star Wars in the late 1970's. I have seen everything from Buck Rogers to Battlestar Galactica to Star Trek. I have seen the Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. I have seen Superman and Wonder Woman(TV series). I have seen the cartoons(Superfriends, Justice League, etc.) of all of these characters including the X-Men & Wolverine(their movies as well!). NONE OF THEM COMPARE TO THIS. NONE. NOT ONE. This is the MASTERPIECE that Stan Lee, head of Marvel Comics, has waited for for decades! If I could rate it 15 stars, I would! ACTION. ACTION. ACTION. ACTION. Just when you think the action and the movie is over, the action starts up all over again! The best "superhero" movie EVER made! EASILY. One of the if not the best action films that I have ever seen! This is not just martial arts and or super streetfights with heroes like Thor or the Hulk(both do not appear in this movie) that can destroy a city in a day. This film is more like a WAR. UN...BE...LIEVABLE special effects and CGI! GUNFIGHTS, GUNFIGHTS, and more GUNFIGHTS. This is a Marvel movie that is not afraid to show PREMIUM VIOLENCE. Good martial arts fights are to be expected with anything that has Batroc, Black Widow, and Captain America in it. At times this was more of a Jackie Chan film than a gunfight film but do not let that statement fool you; this is easily the most violent superhero/comic book movie I have EVER seen and I am 44 years old and love comics, horror, and scifi. I would rate this movie PG-13 but the violence level is borderline rated R. As with all Marvel films these days, STAY WATCHING UNTIL THE END OF THE FINAL CREDITS. THERE ARE 2, that means TWO, "treats". One in the middle of the final credits and one at the very end. They paint a rather chilling picture of what the future holds for Captain America, the Avengers, and one guy(like Doctor Who says:NO SPOILERS!) who you probably will not believe is alive until you see it. THE BEST MARVEL(Avengers, X-Men, Iron Man, etc.) OR DC(Superman, Batman, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, etc.) COMICS MOVIE...EVER...MADE. I mean this people! My mouth is just now raising up off the floor!

I never got to see any of the Cap movies -- primarily due to my work schedule and disdain for crowds and weird, inconsiderate people at movie theaters. However once I finished watching Endgame, I really wanted to see all the Cap movies. Lucky for me, Amazon had them all for streaming. I had mentioned my predicament to a comic fan patient of mine, and he suggested the order I should watch them...and he was right. THIS was the best of the 3. The Bucky character was very powerful in his presence and gave me the backstory for Endgame. WOW...what a foil...what a nice complexity. If you haven't watched it, do yourself a favor and chill out at home streaming it tonight. Popcorn optional.

Captain America: The winter solider is one of the few sequels that I feel manage to perform at the same level as the previous movie. Chris Evans is an immaculate actor in this role, really bringing the role into the realm of reality (Maybe not the whole science experiment, but his unwavering patriotism and moral values). His acting really convinces an audience of his authenticity in character. Samual Jackson and Robert Redford also enhance the movie with whit while increasing the depth of Nick Furys character. I like Scarlet Johanson, but I liked her character a little more in the first avengers. She still provides a good performance, but I felt a few of the scenes with her didn't align with some of the characteristics of her overall character. Anthony Mackie also provides a great falcon, and is a perfect addition to these movies.
The movie provides a nice combination of action to comedy while still providing enough of a story line to keep it interesting. All in all definitely one of my favorites, even after seeing it a few times.
