4.0 out of 5 starsSurprisingly Good Continuation
February 13, 2016
The Heir is more of a companion than a continuation of the Selection series.
I must admit, Eadlyn is a frustrating, annoying, and bratty protagonist who I often found myself wishing I could slap, but by the end of the novel, I realized that somewhere along they way she had matured and developed into a tolerable main character who I could root for.
Now, after reading about 35 women chase after 1 man, I was extremely excited to see it play out the other way around. Kiera Cass did not disappoint. I cannot decide which of the several main male characters that I want to be with Eadlyn. I absolutely loved Kile, Henri, Fox, and Hale. And Erik as well but I don't know if he counts as being in the running for her hand.
My absolute favorite part of this novel was, of course, Maxon and America. They were still just as adorable as they were in the first three books. Maxon is still completely devoted to America while America adores Maxon with all of her being. I loved the references to their selection and the shenanigans that occurred.
I desperately need the sequel, especially after that god awful cliff hanger. Seriously, give me more now.
The Heir was a solid 4/5, which is surprising considering it had so much to live up to due to it following the amazing first three Selection books.

2.0 out of 5 starsThe next generation was more like a poorer cousin.
May 1, 2017
Actual rating 2.5 stars.

I was curious to see where Kiera Cass would take this series with the next generation… I have a love/hate relationship with these books, issues with the characters and their attitudes, but love the complexity of plot and tabloid allure. However, ‘The Heir’ failed to deliver on all of these counts.

I did not connect with Eadlyn as much as I did with America. I found Eadlyn entitled, and we never get to find out - due to the nature of the narrative - if she indeed has a worldly view as expected of her in the role of monarch. Her ‘work’ is always alluded to but never completely explained. It left me thinking Eadlyn as shallow, protected and scared. It builds great tension, but left me not all that invested in her future. I put it down to how she was written – educated, aloof and separate from everyone else. Eadlyn herself mused on this, how she had intentionally isolated herself in order to become a better ruler – it also made her hard to relate to, cold, and somewhat bitchy.

There was also a lot less going on in this novel in comparison to the Selection trilogy. We were aware of the caste systems, the politics and the plotting and planning of all the characters involved. In ‘The Heir’ we lost most of that and instead were dealt up a dish of Eadlyn’s self discovery. I wanted more about the rebels, more conniving politics, more entwined storylines – like The Selection.

Even though this effectively re-booted the story line, it left me with much of the feeling of a middle book in a trilogy, setting things up, moving the story forward a small amount, but resolving little.

The ending was brilliant. A cliff hanger I did not see coming. Not in a million years. It is the one thing that has me wanting to read the next in the series. Plus, I feel as though I’m going to get more of what I want from this new generation of royals.

It was an easy read, but I ended spreading it out over a week, consuming the last half in a day; as I mentioned, there didn’t feel like there was enough going on to hold my attention. It was fun, and enjoyable, but a little flat. Though not the best book of the series, it certainly has set things up for an explosive ending and I can’t wait to find out what is going to happen.

We get glimpses of Maxon, America and Aspen, and many of the other characters from the first three books: it was entertaining to see how they had grown over the last few decades. There was less explained about the world and political landscape than I would have liked, and Kiera Cass seemed to spend a lot of time describing clothes more than anything… But the Selection series has been a guilty pleasure of mine, though I find many faults in the characters and tropes, the novels are undeniably compelling to read. I just can’t stop. So Cass must doing something right.

No, seriously. I know it's tempting to want to get "the conclusion" to the story, but you're just in for a disappointment. You do get some additional information about existing characters from the first three books, but the focus of this is entirely on Eadlyn and that is truly unfortunate. She starts out as a truly bratty girl, and while she does turn around on that point, her entire evolution - indeed, the entire series - seems rushed and awkward. She makes a far greater change from the beginning of book one to the end of book two than America did over three books, and it's entirely unbelievable. She essentially grows a new personality and a new set of morals in the space of 8 weeks, and I just don't buy it. Eadlyn is such a shallow character, with no depth, and I find that time spent with her is uncomfortable from start to finish.

The rest of the story feels the same way - shallow and rushed. Perhaps Kiera Cass would have done better to extend Eadlyn's tale over three books as well, so it didn't seem so completely jarring. The end feels completely out of the blue and has the ring of "deus ex machina" about it, and made me wish I hadn't wasted my time. I don't really believe in any of the other characters either; even America and Maxon seem to be carbon copies of the strong, well-developed characters they were only one book ago. The little tidbits about them and the rest of the original gang are not worth the flattening they undergo in this book and the subsequent one, and I'd rather they live in their original form in my mind.

I'm still a huge fan of the first three books, but it seems to me that it might be better to simply pretend that the story ends there.

5.0 out of 5 starsAn intriguing continuation of The Selection series

For years now, I have read the Selection series so many times, SO MANY TIMES in both Greek and English. There are not enough words to describe my long lasting love for the Selection series. It will always remain my most favorite YA series ever. So romantic, so heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time. America and Maxon will always be my most favorite couple.

Eadlyn has a totally different character than them, however she does try her best to follow her parents' steps and be a beloved queen. She makes a lot of mistakes, but she tries her best to stand up and fix them. Kile too will always be my most favorite character of the next generation!

Thank you very much, Kiera Cass, for creating this world.

Very fluffy, very easy to read and finish. No strong violence, no swearing, no sex scenes. Suitable even to 12 years old readers.

4.0 out of 5 starsFun and Entertaining Read

Honestly, I enjoyed it more that I thought I would!!! That ending had me tearing up! Need to read the next one now!

I came into this having pretty low expectations because I've heard not so great things about The Heir and The Crown. However, after a few chapters, I was actually enjoying The Heir. Eadlyn was bratty, but she wasn't annoying to me. I tried to put myself in her shoes and I could understand why she acted the way she did. I also liked that she wasn't indecisive like America (which seriously annoyed me in the previous books). Another thing I loved was Eadlyn's relationship with her brothers specially her twin Ahren.

It was also really nice to see other characters from the previous books make appearances. Obviously, I loved seeing Maxon and America... but mostly Maxon. I thought it was great that Aspen and Lucy are both still at the palace and still an important part of the family.

I thought the Selection guys were all okay... No one really stood out for me though and the "thing" between Eadlyn and Kile wasn't really doing it for me. I did predict who she might choose in the end because there were some subtle signs. I was hoping they would develop the romance between them and give them more interactions but it didn't happen in this book. (Also, there wasn't that much in The Crown either sooo that was a big letdown).

That ending though! Had me teary while reading. When a book makes me teary or cry and makes me want to pick up the next book ASAP... I pretty much automatically give it 5 stars. But because the romance aspect was lacking in this book (which I loved in the previous books), I'm stuck between 4 -4.5 stars...leaning towards 4 stars.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty fun read and I did enjoy it. Just not as much as the other three books.

4.0 out of 5 starsEadlyn was not what I expected
June 21, 2016
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
I picked up this book already preparing myself on not liking Eadlyn. I read so many negative comments about her that I for sure thought she would annoy me as well, since I can be pretty picky about main characters. I was absolutely shocked by how much I ended up loving her. It's true that there were a few times where I thought she was being unfair and snobbish, but her good traits clearly outweigh the bad. She is by far one of the strongest female characters I have ever read.
(Spoilers up ahead!!!) The fact that she has to worry about being queen and always having to look perfect and say the right things at the right time with a camera almost always in her face is impressive enough, but when you add on to the fact that she is forced into a situation where she has to find a mate, has to please her parents, has to deal with not being taken seriously, has to deal with her twin brother leaving her, has to deal with her mother facing life and death and her father in shambles, and also help her other brothers through this is utterly amazing. I keep thinking that she will for sure break down completely and try to run away from it all, but she never does. She has faced so much criticism and insults that it's surprising she is able to get out of bed each day, let alone help run a country. I truly love how complicated and flawed Eadlyn is and there's no doubting that her strength is admirable (at least, to me it is).
Putting her aside, this book was a great read for me. I loved seeing characters again from America's story and I loved how close Eadlyn was to her brothers. Henri is absolutely adorable and I'm surprised to find myself rooting for him. Kile and Hale are great, Erik is amazing and Ean is amusing. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by who Eadlyn ends up picking and I look forward to the final volume!

I wanted more of Maxum and America, although, to be fair, this was a new story about their daughter. I didn't feel the boys in the selection were developed so you felt an attachment to any of them. The fun and elegance of the events and dates weren't brought forward in this story. They weren't described and brought alive. Especially the elegance of the castle and the dresses. There was only one beautiful dress in this story that was described and made me tingle. It was more about the Princess and her arrogance and learning about herself. The first 3 held such an adventure and were humorous and scary ..they were page turners. This story was about a self-absorbed princess and her inner struggles. There weren't any characters you could care any about. So, sorry, it didn't hold the same enchantment as the first 3.

I quite enjoyed the original storyline with America and Maxon through the first three novels, so naturally I was just as excited about this new storyline as the next fanatic. But I wanted to be cautious with all of the mixed reviews. However, I must say that this book blew me away. I'm not typically privy to extremes, but I felt completely captivated by this story all the way until the end. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up til three in the morning to finish it and am now anxiously awaiting the next novel! I very much enjoyed the "knowing looks" between our original cast and I loved seeing them interact in their "new" roles (that they've been settled in for quite some time now). I thought it was interesting how America reminded me of Maxon's mother a few times. She grew nicely into her role, I believe, as did the others. I loved the twins. I've always been fascinated by the bond between brother and sister anyway, so this was a real treat for me. There were several scenes that I just drooled over. The romance is sweet and, at least to me, unpredictable to a degree. I still am not sure who to root for! I loved how our main character has grown too. I can't wait to see where she goes and how much further she grows. Thanks, Kiera Cass! You've done it again!

1.0 out of 5 starsIf you are not, nor have ever been, a silly 15 year old airhead girl, this isn't the book or series for you.

This is definitely a series for 15 and under. I will say the writing and editing is good, but the characters, plausibility and story line isn't. Silly names made up by a teenager. Silly places also named by a teenager. The main character, America, is a classic, airhead, selfish teenager who takes far to long long to make her mind up and to do right by the main men in her life. I was irritated throughout most of this series and had a hard time finishing them. I truly regret the money I spent.

Bekah Booknuts_
3.0 out of 5 starsNot as good as the rest of the Selection but not terrible.

As much as I completely enjoyed the trilogy of America in the Selection. This one was a bit of a disappointment. I own it to continue with the series and I bought this as soon as it came out. So it was definitely on my “most anticipated” list. The cover is gorgeous and the heroine annoying.

Yes I said it. Eadlyn (how would you pronounce that?) is the daughter of America and Maxon and it was cool to see their character development that American has a lot more refinement and Maxon is a great father. She feels the burden of whom she will one day be. The Queen the first in their kingdom since before Maxon became King, it didn’t matter when you were born the first male would be king. Well with Maxon and America ruling they changed A LOT of things including this.

With the changes comes a great amount of new struggles and unrest. When Maxon can’t figure out how to appease his people, he feels they need a distraction. So Eadlyn agreed to do the Selection.

Eadlyn agrees to the Selection only to appease her father and help her kingdom. But underneath she refused to be “tied down” to any man and secretly plans to not marry anyone.

What I didn’t like about Eadlyn was how much she annoyed me! I felt like she did nothing but complain and was so detached from her people and what they really need in a ruler. She is cold, selfish and drove me nuts.

I also felt like Kiera Cass doesn’t know how to write boys that well. The guys in the Selection were….not so boyish… plus the relationship between Eadlyn and her brother was off. I have four brother and we are all pretty dang close. But not THAT close. It was a little weird.

The romance? lacked. It was obvious from the moment we were introduced to this character what was going to happen. Plus I felt with this character he “changed” too quickly and I disappointed and wished they didn’t become friends so fast after years of disliking each other.

Overall I look forward to the rest of this series but was disappointed in Eadlyn’s character and the fact that Cass doesn’t really write boys well.
