Fatal insomnia! A real hook, an obscure disease that changes who and what you are. Characters, it is so easy to say doctor and plug in a doctor. Gangster, ruthless businessman, cop. All these could be stereotypes but CJ Lyons goes under the skin to show who they are in a way that you can care about even the worst person.
If you don't care about the people then you don't care about the story. Angela Rossi is a passionate skilled ER doctor and she is losing everything."Farewell to Dreams" is a great title, it sums up how Angela feels as her life spirals out of control.
In this story and the sequel "Raging Dawn" you are shown pieces of a puzzle, only not all the pieces fit. It might be that there is more than one puzzle. What is obvious might not be the reality. Even at the finish you keep learning more.
When you finish Farewell to Dreams it is a complete story but you really can;t wait for the next story to reveal itself. Anne Chaconas at Bad Ass Marketing gave me the chance to read the sequel "Raging Dawn" and that book was every bit as tight and suspenseful as the first book. There are surprises and even hints that some things that were completed in the first book may not be as finished as you thought.
Darn, now I want to read the next book and it probably isn't even written yet.
After purchasing this book, I thought maybe this would be a good one to read now. Good?!?! This book literally blew me away. To read a book with such an outstanding storyline filled with characters that were bigger than life just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I just couldn't get enough of it. I wanted to know the ending but didn't want it to be finished.
Fatal Insomnia - I'd never heard of such an illness. An amazing thing to learn about but what a horrible condition for someone to live with. Cannot for the life of me understand someone who is trapped in their own body. Just horrifying.
I will not discuss the details. It's so many stories intertwined. Just let me say this is one book you have to read. C. J. Lyons: you did good!! Would love to give you more than five stars - like maybe ten or twelve. Hope to read many more books you've written.
I generally avoid medical thrillers but I was intrigued by the idea of a fatal insomnia. Angela Rossi is the ER doctor who is struggling with insomnia, tremors, and now hallucinations. One night while she is treating a patient, she experiences the first one and it's full of echoes of color, strange movements, coupled with music intense and soulful. The experience is a prelude to a fugue state where her senses become hyperactive and her body remains frozen and unresponsive. WOW!
She meets two men , Detective Matthew Ryder and Devon Price, who become a very important part of her life in a very short time. All of them are very interested in justice for victims of violence and learn to work together.
This is the first book I have read by this author and it was outstanding. This book is a blend of very taut suspense and drama with multiple twists and turns. C.J. Lyons has created three dimensional characters that come to life right off the pages. The author is not afraid to tackle grief and explore the consequences of loss. This is a totally absorbing story that flows beautifully. You meet extraordinary and memorable people both primary and secondary characters, but especially Angela and Ryder. I only wished I could have gotten to know Angela better. Given the nature of Angela's disease, I liked that the romantic attraction between Angela and Ryder was not overdone. I was so taken by this authors talent that I purchased three more of her books. A new fan!!
I really enjoyed this book. It was my first CJ Lyons read and I was really impressed. It was well written all around, full of action and suspense, with a little romance. The characters and scene were well developed and it well done. I could easily see it as a movie.
The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars was that I found it hard to keep up with the characters. Not that there were too many, but with all of the different perspectives it was hard to settle into each characters POV. Especially since Angela Rossi's was in first person - the best POV in my opinion. I connected with her far more than any other.
The other thing that made the characters confusing was that some characters referred to others by different names (some would call them by their last names, while others would call them by their first name). The lack of consistency made it hard to figure out who was who and pulled me out of the story, trying to figure out who the character was interacting with or talking about.
As usual CJ Lyons hooked me from the first page. Some medical thrills and as always great romantic suspense but was a little different with a slight paranormal twist. Different but still a great read. Great in depth characters with strength and weaknesses and you really feel that you come to know them. I am reading the second book now and the story continues. I can't wait to find out what happens to Dr Rossi and I root for her while she fights her illness and the bad guys and still tries to do the right thing for victims of some horrible crimes.
I've read and enjoyed other books by CJ Lyons but this medical thriller is so good it kept me up late into the night to finish it in one sitting. I literally could not put it down. The title refers to the heroine Dr. Angela Rossi's debilitating insomnia which brings on catatonic states. Her vision of a young girl in peril leads her on a terrifying hunt for a serial killer into a bizarre underground labyrinth controlled by the city's ruthless gangs. There's fast-paced action and an intriguing romance with troubled detective Matthew Ryder. The world of the gangs and the family that controls them is brought to life with frightening intensity. Added tension comes from Angie's realization that she might be dying. Highly recommended.
I was tipped off to this book (and Author) by a FB friend; A really good, dark, semi-psycological psychic (medical) drama mystery that is intensely intense. And with a very disfunctional family. But with some hope for humanity (at least it felt that way to me; some of the characters had survived nasty early life, yet still had good impulses). Being part of a medical family, it was nice to have what seemed like realistic depictions of medical situations. I did get sucked in fairly quickly, Also a very satisfying ending. And I do know a few doctor musicians, although not psychic ones. I would try a sample to see how you like it.
This book was so riveting that I read 47% yesterday and finished the book today. I could not put the book down. Dr. Angela Rossi and Detective Matthew Ryder brought together by circumstances to find a missing little girl. It seems the action does not stop. In this book you have a lot of action, crime, suspense, romance, great characters.
I gave it a 5 Star rating because I feel it deserved it. I probably would have rated it higher if I could. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes crime thrillers. I think C. J. Lyons is an amazing author. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
I have always loved CJ Lyons books, I read them as soon as they are published! This is a great thriller, a very intricately woven story. Dr. Angela Rossi is a complex character. A brilliant physician, an accomplished musician, and now facing a fatal disease. Detective Matthew Ryder is scarred in his own way, but oh so lovable! Together they must stop the terrible plight that threatens their city. Missing girls and a secret of tunnels under the city, just a few of the obstacles for these two! I was awake far into the night flipping pages, heart racing, This is what we all look for in a thriller!
