As far as I am aware, Cosequin is the only glucosamine/chondroiten joint supplement that has actually been studied for content and efficacy. Supplements, for pets or people, are not well-regulated and so there is typically no guarantee that what is listed on the bottle is what is actually in the bottle. There could be less or more of the substance and there could be additional ingredients that aren't listed. And supplements, unlike food, can make any kinds of claims about what they treat and fix without having to provide evidence.
Now, I could be wrong and that other products have undergone the same types of clinical trials but I am simply not aware of them. I am not a paid expert on joint supplements.
But Nutramax Laboratories, the manufacturer, provides information on the research and veterinary trials of Cosequin to provide evidence that it does make a difference for joint health and that they have strong standards for their manufacturing process. That's why I choose Cosequin over other joint supplements because I like to know that I am not just tossing money at sugar pills and that my dogs are actually getting something to help them. I have yet to have a dog refuse to eat one, either, and one of my dogs is kind of a picky critter so they must taste ok. But I have not given one a try, myself.
I have had several older dogs over the years who have taken this and I do think it makes a difference although that is entirely subjective on my part. But I had one dog who would definitely seem to start feeling particularly painful if I screwed-up and ran out. She would be fine for a couple days and then I could see the trembling and licking and chewing at her knees start to pick up. Then it typically took a few days after I put her back on it to see improvement. And that would make me feel like the worst dog-mom on the face of the Earth so DON'T RUN OUT!
Overall, I am very happy with this product and as long as I have aging dogs I will continue to purchase it.
have been using this for years at the recommendation of a veterinarian/friend. It has really helped my older large-breed dogs stay active and diminish the arthritic joint effects seen in older age (12+ collie and kelpie). It was recommended as it is one of the few preparations that has strict quality control and actually tests the product for content. In other words, what it says on the label is what is actually in each tablet. I have used other Cosequin products as well (for cats and equine) and they, like this formulation, are the most reliable, effective joint supplement on the market. And, I have tried a lot of others before I found Cosequin. Great product from a quality company with an excellent track record. I highly recommend this to any of my friends and relative with older dogs (I rarely recommend any products to people). Try it; you will not be disappointed and you will see improvements in your dog's mobility in about a month.
I have three older Beagles that had just about given up on playing with each other. I started giving each a half pill in the morning and half in the afternoon. Within five days they were chasing each other around the yard.
I have two 80 lb rotts. One of which has hip issues and our vet recommended that we started a daily supplement to help her get a round. Our vet gave us another medication which helped out a little. Then we made the switch to cosequin DS. Its like a different dog, she used to sit and watch our other dog run the entire yard from the side lines, which in turn made her a little heavier adding to the hip problems. Now she is out running our other dog and playing like the pup she is. Because of the increase in exercise she has also lost some wieght and seems to be much happier and in less pain. I would HIGHLY!! recommend this product to anyone whos dog seems to be slowed down from hip or joint issues.
Also it is very important to follow the loading dose that is on the package. We were very worried about the quality of life our little girl would live with, with her hip issues and this supplement has turned that completely around. If I could give 10 stars and two thumbs up I would.
My nine year old dog benefits greatly when she is on Cosequin DS Plus MSM 360 Joint Health tablets. I give my dog one in the morning and one in the evening with her food. Whenever my dog would run or get up from the couch or floor, it would take her forever to get in a standing position. The product did take a couple months to get into her system. There is a huge improvement with her mobility.
I've been buying these for a few years now for my 12 year old boxer. They work great, he loves them so I keep buying them. They're good quality and definitely make a difference with his old man joint pain. Better than the other off-brands, always go with cosequin!
We adopted a little shepherd mix who wandered into our yard during a storm. She's always had a significant limp for which the vet can't pinpoint a cause (without x-rays or other expensive testing that wouldn't change the way we treat the problem). I had her on a non-MSM glucosamine chondroitin tab along with a pricey liquid joint supplement that the vet advised we use, but the limp actually appeared to worsen. Early this summer I switched to the Cosequin DS Plus, and --- knock on wood --- although the limp is still evident, it has lessened and the dog is much more active and happy. Could be coincidence, but since the weather hasn't changed much, nor the type of exercise, and the progression of discomfort had earlier been progressive, not the sudden result of any particular event, I'm pretty well convinced that this supplement is the key to Sasha's improvement.
This was highly recommended by my vet for my geriatric basset hound. He is very arthritic. Since we began using this product he moves with more ease and will even occasionally play with other dogs just like he did when he was younger. My favorite part about these tablets is that they're chewable. My basset hound has a tendency to be picky and will eat around pills if I try to hide them in food or pill pockets. I don't have to hide these in anything because he thinks they're treats.
My 8year old XL dog who is as picky as he is spoiled was having problems with his joints. I've noticed he was having problems getting up in the morning and did not want to go for walks anymore it became difficult for him to jump in and out of the vehicles. So we got him a ramp for the truck and Cosequin for his joints after taking it for 2 weeks we began to see the difference he was all over the place once again. Running in the park and playing with other dogs of course he did not get better over night but it is a remarkable change from where he started. He's bee on it for 4 months now and he is in everybody's business lol and can't wait to go out and play. So for us this has work wonderfully. He eats it with his food and he can even take it as a treat. Because of his size he needs to take quite a few and the product is not cheap but it does work!!!
