Sleight of Hand - It's a Scary World We Live In!
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2012
Slight of Hand is the second in the series of the Hart and Drake novels by author, C.J. Lyons. It takes up after both Hart and Drake suffered physical and emotional injuries at the end of Nerves of Steel. They are suffering in their jobs, individually and as a couple.
Friends of Cassie Hart think she has returned to work too soon when she thinks that a perfect and well loved (by the medical team) mother is causing her son's medical problems for her own attention. (Munchausen by proxy syndrome) This is a difficult thing to prove and the deeper Cassie gets, the more people she alienates, including the child's grandfather, a Senator. In her determination, or stubbornness, she keeps digging for evidence to the point of being terminated from her beloved job.
She asks for Drakes help putting him in the vortex of this evil, jeopardizing the life of his mother, and complicating his recovery from the previous situation Hart dragged him into. Twists and turns as friends and associates takes sides.
This book didn't catch me until about half way and then the sickness of the child's mom, with Munchausen by Proxy, was gripping my soul as I cheered for Cassie to find the right evidence before she got silenced by the mother's family. The plot twists and turns as strange bedfellows appear - complicating Cassie's portrayal of her evidence, turning against her with each new discovery.
The ending is shocking and thoroughly unanticipated. Wow, is all I can say. Well that, and after I regained my balance, I immediately ordered book three in the series. Hold on to your bonnet!
