This review is regarding labeling, not the product itself. I feel obligated to make sure consumers are reading the labels carefully. Apparently, standardization of dosing does not apply to animals the way it does humans. When ordering Nutramax Cosequin DS, one would assume the "DS" means double-strength; when, in fact, the strength varies.

The Nutramax Cosequin DS (maximum strength) label reads: Glucosamine Hydrochloride ....600mg (132 tabs/$29.28).
The Nutramax Cosequin DS (double strength) label reads: Glucosamine** minimum....500mg (250 tabs/$57.15).
The Nutramax Cosequin DS Capsules for Dogs doesn't list the amounts under the product description at all.

I am not sure if this is a knock off from what is being sold elsewhere but we gave this to our German Shepard that was having signs of arthritis, within hours he was vomiting, shaking, could hardly breath and unable to stand. He became paralyzed and we ended up having to put him down. I am sick that we thought we were helping by giving him this medication, but this medication was a nightmare for our family

Worked miracles on our German Shepherd

I love this product!! Here is why:

I got my first German Shepherd puppy about a 1-1/2 years ago, and didn't realize the importance of checking into the soundness of her parents' hips and joints. Before she was even one year old, she had back-to-back incidents where she hurt herself playing with our other dog, and exhibited lameness in her back leg. She was in so much pain I had to help her up the outside steps, getting behind her with hands under her belly to hold her back legs up so she could climb up with her front legs.

When it happened the 2nd time, we took her to the local vet, who felt her back joints, and said they felt "mushy", like they were not solid at all. She said we'd gotten a "lemon". She recommended we take our GS to a Vet who specializes in orthopedic surgery to check her out.

The ortho vet took X-rays and did numerous other tests, and told us our GS had two bad back ACLs, as well as hip dysplasia. He recommended she get both knees operated on, one after the other. She would have to be on restricted activity during the lengthy recovery time of 3-6 months per knee. In addition, each operation would cost a couple thousand dollars! We were upset to think of our energetic, fun loving young dog getting laid-up for so long. We knew she'd hate it. And I was shocked at the estimated cost; it might not have seemed like much to the Vet, but it was a lot of money to me. I could come up with the money if I had to. But it would mean taking money from something else (like work on our house that needed to be done, such as buying a new furnace). And on top of that, I was concerned about whether this was really the right thing to do, especially since it had been a few weeks since she'd exhibited lameness. So I needed to think about it.

In talking about the situation with a friend, he told me about Cosequin DS, and I looked it up immediately, I was impressed by the positive reviews, and ordered some immediately. We started our GS on the "initial dosage" right away.

So what happened? Our GS has been injury-free ever since she's been on Cosequin (several months now). She runs and plays with our other dog, dashing and darting around our yard like any normal, healthy young dog. She is happy, active and enjoying her life. She does not exhibit any symptoms of being in distress, even thought the ortho Vet said she would be in constant pain without the operations.

Will she someday need to have the knee operations? I don't know. I do believe that the vet saw knee and hip problems. But my gut tells me, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", at least not as long as her quality of life is so good.

So yes, I LOVE this product, and highly recommend it to others. I don't know if your results will be as good as ours, but I hope so, and it is certainly worth a try!

This seemed to help my 70 pd. chow/german shepherd mix, BUT within a couple of weeks she was having horrible spells. Stiffness, jerking movements, could not lay on her side, did not want me to touch her and constant panting. I took her to the vet and they did a blood and urine test. It all came back normal. BUT she continued to have these spells, they would last for 1 or 2 days. She was exhausted with this condition. I thought about it and realized this was different from the other Cosequin tablets I had been giving for years. I stopped giving her the pills and whala-she hasn't had another episode since. Two weeks now and all is well.

So, our oldest furry kid is getting up there in age. A few years back, he started limping pretty significantly (right rear leg). Vet advised he had arthritis and would need surgery to repair that knee (estimated at around $5000 give or take) and while I'd totally take a second mortgage on my house to make sure all my furry kids are healthy, I'm not EAGER to do so. Lol. So, like good consumers, we got a second opinion. 2nd vet agreed with first prognosis BUT gave us a suggestion. She said we could try giving him Cosequin and limit his movement for a few weeks (kennel him 24/7 except to potty and eat) so, we figured that's be worth a shot. 4 weeks of Cosequin and kennel rest and our baby was good as new! He was even moving better! Cosequin saved our asses a busload of money! That was 6 years ago and we've been faithful Cosequin users since! Now, it is a permanent part of our kids routine. All 4 get these pills in their meals everyday. And we have had absolutely zero joint problem with any of them since! We love Cosequin!

Our Border Collie Lab mix started having arthritis pain in her left hip at 11 yrs old we ordered these because they was cheaper than what the vetanary hospital sold and done what the instristions said, She weighs right around 75 pounds so we gave her a initial dose of 3 tablets a day with a little penut butter as she won't take any medicen by itself. but she'll eat it just fine with a dab of peanut butter. It stopped her from whimpering when she would get up and down and she does fine when moved back to two tabs a day. Ocasionly we have to up her to three a day if the weather is very bad ie. wet and cold for days.

I am a skeptic. I checked the ratings on fakespot and they were excellent. My 10-year-old Lab, needless to say, is getting old. He was having trouble jumping into the car, getting up on the recliner to sit with me, was gingerly sitting down. I have two 12 1/2 yr old part Huskies. I did not realize how great this product really was until I ran out and bought another brand of cosequin in a local store. In a few days time, my bigger dog started to limp. Because I was brain dead at the time I took him to the vet. He definitely has some back issues and the vet asked me if I changed anything lately. The brain finally kicked in and I mentioned I changed pills. She told me to go home and check the dosage. Well, after a couple days of pain meds and multiple, multiple pills of the other brand, he has stopped limping and hopefully is out of pain. Although in all fairness, he never did stop running in the yard. This will be the last time I run out of the cosequin. It's bad enough to realize your babies are getting old but to know you caused them pain is horrible. My dogs will be on this until the day they die and I will probably use this on any future dogs. Fantastic stuff.

I believe that this product is a knock off. The one we got from our vet worked perfectly and helped my dog immensely. I thought I would save some money and buy it from Amazon since it is about $20 cheaper on here. The first night I gave it to my dog she started throwing up and acting very sick, took a couple of days for her to get better in which I did not give her any of these tablets. After a few days when she seemed better I figured I would start giving her the supplement again. Same thing, She took it in within hours was throwing up again. DO NOT GIVE THESE TO YOUR ANIMAL. shame on you Amazon for selling this bootleg “medication”

Give this to my two labs and they have no issues whatsoever with it. They eat it as a 'treat' or I can put it in their food. No vomiting, no stomach issues. Started this when my baby lab (1yr at the time) was dxd with hip dysplasia on the recommendation of my brother-in-law who is a vet. The ortho wanted to do surgery right away. I was leery of it and had my brother-in-law look at her x-rays (wish he lived closer) and he said because she's not even fully grown yet, to wait it out a few months. We started her on a mobility prescription food, daramaxx, the cosequin DS and swimming once a week at a dog pool and she's done wonderful ever since. We've stopped the swimming but are doing the rest. She's 3 now, and although we know she's getting worse, her pain level stays manageable and she's still mobile.
