The music is wonderful. The track editing (I purchased the mp3) are divided horribly. Some of the tracks... particularly track 2... cut off the start of the music. 5 Stars to Yo-yo and Ennio. 1 Star to whoever or whatever divided these tracks.
Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!
I heard some of these peices on Pandora and found myself "liking" all of them. Morricone's music was used as the background, the setting, the mood and provided highlights for a mutitude of movies; many of which we would not even realise we remember until we hear them reprised on this CD. With these arrangements the peices are turned into songs for cello and orchestra that bring us back to these delightful tunes, or charm the listener who has not heard them before. Yo-Yo Ma's interpretation is masterful as he makes his instrument sing the lead then joins with the orchestra to promote each peice to a work that stands on its own.
Yo-Yo Ma is the consummate artist, but I missed the human voice as God's perfect instrument in some of the selections, If you have heard Rigacci do Ecstasy Of Gold and Once Upon a Time in The West, or Groban or Evanchoe do Cinema Paradisio (Se) than you know the point I am trying to make. Still if you are a Morricone fan this should be in your collection.
