Sufficient but not necessary?
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2019
There was a time in the '60's and early '70's when "Women's Wear Daily" (now "W") was an essential purchase for fashionistas of both sexes around the world. WWD, as it was then called, profiled the New York scene, which has slowly declined-- but then so have Paris and Milan as international mergers have taken a wrecking ball to everything. The biggest hits have come to once-imperial fashion houses and their namesakes--Balenciaga, Yves St. Laurent, Halston, Givenchy, Chanel, Gucci. In America, the clothes in W still celebrate pure, ridiculous creativity. You can't know what sub-generes like Vogue, ELLE and Harper's Bazaar are going to be selling without studying minute details in W. Through the looking glass where frivolity meets money, W keeps on keeping on because the industry seems to need it. And if fashion is a pointless preoccupation of human beings--and it is--I can't think of a better way to embody it than W.
